Overview
Our client, a Jewish University in NYC, seeks a Media Relations Manager to lead strategic communications, messaging, and media relations with an emphasis on Jewish identity and values. The role oversees internal and external communications, content strategy, and storytelling in alignment with the university's mission. The manager will partner with recruitment, development, alumni relations, and academic leadership, promote student, faculty, and alumni achievements, support communications for public events, recruitment, and fundraising campaigns, and serve as a trusted advisor in crisis situations. This is a hybrid position requiring 3-4 days on-site in Lower Manhattan. Responsibilities
Develop and implement comprehensive media relations and communications strategies that elevate the university’s visibility and reputation. Craft and distribute press releases, media advisories, speeches, op-eds, and other external communications. Build and maintain strong relationships with local, national, and Jewish media outlets. Serve as the primary point of contact for media inquiries, coordinating timely and accurate responses. Collaborate with recruitment, development, alumni relations, and academic teams to create targeted communication strategies that support enrollment, fundraising, and community engagement. Highlight and promote the achievements of students, faculty, alumni, and institutional initiatives through media outreach and storytelling. Manage communications around public events, recruitment campaigns, and fundraising initiatives. Lead crisis communication planning and execution, ensuring clear, consistent, and sensitive messaging during challenging situations. Oversee content strategy across platforms, ensuring alignment with the university’s mission and Jewish values. Monitor media coverage, analyze outcomes, and prepare reports to evaluate the effectiveness of communication strategies. Required Qualifications
7+ years of professional experience in media relations, public relations, or communications within higher education. Strong understanding of Judaism, Jewish culture, and the unique communications needs of a Jewish institution. Demonstrated success in developing and executing communication strategies that build awareness and strengthen institutional reputation. Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills across a variety of formats and platforms. Proven experience in crisis communication and media management. Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with journalists, community partners, and stakeholders. Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously. Collaborative mindset with experience working cross-functionally with leadership, faculty, staff, and external partners. Familiarity with digital media platforms, analytics, and content management systems.
