Mid-Sr. Energy Storage Transmission Planning & Interconnection Engineer
Locations: FULLY REMOTE (Anywhere in the USA) OR Houston, TX (HYBRID) This is an opportunity to join an industry-leading renewable energy venture with strong private equity backing, focused on developing, executing, and operating utility-scale energy storage projects. They have a nationwide portfolio of over 9GW+ of projects, including grid-connected standalone battery storage assets. The Transmission, Interconnection, and Market Operations Teams support Project Development, EPC, and Origination efforts for a company tackling next-generation challenges in battery storage. Responsibilities:
Grid analysis:
Conduct steady-state transmission studies using tools like TARA to identify network upgrade needs and develop strategies to mitigate them based on the U.S. market. Modeling expertise:
Build and adjust BESS models in PSLF, PSS/E, and PSCAD for load flow and dynamic simulations, ensuring storage plants perform as expected within the grid. Interconnection management:
Handle generator interconnection submissions across ISOs and RTOs, participate in scoping meetings, and coordinate with utilities and grid operators to advance projects. Technical communication:
Assist teams in understanding interconnection requirements, reactive power needs, and compliance issues. Strategic oversight:
Monitor transmission reliability, analyze industry trends, and assess impacts on projects. Solution assessment:
Identify cost-effective grid solutions, evaluate system constraints, and advise on integration of BESS projects into various transmission and distribution frameworks. Coordination with system operators:
Align project plans with ISO and RTO developments, ensuring compliance with power standards. Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering required; Master's preferred, especially in Power and Energy Systems. Experience:
15 years in power or energy sectors, with additional experience in renewables or complex electrical systems a plus. Technical skills:
Proficiency in modeling, simulations, and power flow studies; TARA experience highly preferred; familiarity with PSCAD, PSLF, PSSE beneficial. Market knowledge:
Understanding of CAISO, PJM, SPP, MISO markets; experience with inverter-based resources advantageous. Communication skills:
Ability to influence teams, present findings, and coordinate across regions and teams. Technical documentation:
Skilled in creating PowerPoint presentations, Excel analyses, and Word documentation.
