Development Clerk

Under general supervision, responsible for receiving the public, greeting customers and answering the main switchboard telephone system. Position requires knowledge of departmental operations and is characterized by varied duties which may involve different and unrelated processes and methods requiring varied knowledge and abilities and/or a broad range of skills. The position is a highly visible public contact position that requires exceptional customer service skills in dealing with gaining closure on issues and occasionally dealing with stressful personal contact situations. This is a support position in the Development Department and will be cross trained in activities of the department to provide back-up to other departmental personnel. Essential functions include: greeting visitors, clients and customers and directing or escorting to correct destination; maintaining the reception area; performing administrative and clerical functions including word processing, filing, answering telephones, scheduling meetings, distributing mail, assisting in the preparation of departmental reports; receiving development applications from contractors, homeowners and their agents; assisting in the preparation and issuance of permits; providing assistance to director and other staff with technical departmental projects including researching, compiling data, and monitoring for compliance with deadlines and agency regulations; and performing related duties as required. Minimum qualifications include: proficient verbal and written communication skills; professional personal presentation; knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures; knowledge of customer service principles and practices; ability to communicate clearly and concisely and deal with a variety of people in different situations courteously, tactfully and efficiently; knowledge of accepted office procedures and etiquette; knowledge and proficiency in MS Office applications; ability to learn planning and zoning practices, building construction activity, and code enforcement procedures. Training, certifications, and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or G.E.D., and two years' experience in a governmental environment or the development/construction industry is required. Must have a valid Florida drivers license. Ability to operate a motor vehicle. Every New Port Richey employee is required to fill out a Disaster Response Survey and is subject to being required to report to work during a declared disaster. Physical demands include: walking or standing some of the time and routine keyboard operations. The job risks exposure to dirt, air contaminants and temperature changes. The job requires normal visual acuity, and field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of smell, depth perception, and texture perception. Ability to sit for periods longer than 30 minutes but not to exceed four hours consecutively. Ability to lift boxes not exceeding 25 pounds occasionally.
