Accounting Technician

This part time position works 20-30 hours a week; CalPERS eligible. Starting pay for this position is $33.14 - $36.45 per hour, depending on experience. The posting will remain open until filled. Under close supervision, performs a variety of accounting and clerical support duties necessary for the maintenance of appropriate accounts, ledgers, journals, registers, and other financial records, reconciliation of various financial documents, processing of various transactions for drawdowns, general ledger reconciliations, and preparation of routine or standard reports concerning financial and statistical records and data input; performs accounts receivable activities; and performs related duties as assigned. The Accounting Technician is the entry level position within the Accounting series positions. The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Performs a variety of responsible technical accounting work in support of assigned accounting functions including in the areas of accounts receivable, and reconciliations. Processes accounts receivable billings, support accounting for multiple programs, including expense coding, budget tracking; maintenance of grant and fund records; collaborate with project leads to gather documentation and ensure timely recording of program billing. Reconciles program-specific financial ledgers and records; general and subsidiary ledgers and supporting schedules; researches and resolves discrepancies, preparation of general ledger journal entries as necessary, and a backup to remote banking check deposits. Compiles data and may assist in the preparation of financial reports; assists in the maintenance of department records as required and assists in the preparation of year-end audit lead schedules. May distribute petty cash and maintain records and receipts. May be a backup to payroll processing Performs special assignments and other related duties as assigned. Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities): Knowledge of fiscal practices and procedures include basic principles of accounting in governmental agencies; principles and techniques of financial recordkeeping; office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases. Ability to apply accounting principles to financial and accounting transactions; prepare, examine, and verify reports and analyses; establish timelines and organize work to meet deadlines; work on various projects simultaneously with frequent interruptions; operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing, spreadsheet and database applications; pay close attention to detail, maintain and organize financial records; develop spreadsheets; organize work to meet deadlines; visualize, articulate and solve complex problems and concepts; understand and apply laws, rules and regulations to meet department's needs; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including co-workers, outside agencies and the public. Education and Experience: Graduation from high school or GED equivalent and two years of experience performing accounting. The qualification guidelines generally describe the knowledge and ability required to enter the job to successfully perform the assigned duties. Any combination of education, experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities will be considered. Public Sector experience is preferred. Other requirements: All District employees are Disaster Service Workers by CA state law and are expected to participate in emergency response initiatives. This could include contributing to the emergency planning process, participating in disaster exercises and training, as well as potentially responding to support actual emergency events. Working conditions and physical activities: Environment: Standard office setting. May be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends; may be required to travel to attend meetings via car, bus, train, or air transportation. Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability to work in an office setting; stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; operate standard office equipment including use of a computer, keyboard, telephone, FAX machine, printers, calculators and copiers; push, pull, lift, and/or carry approximately 25 pounds; and communicate to exchange information. Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction. Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
