Job Title: Controller
Position Overview:
A well-established civil construction company is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Controller to lead its financial operations and oversee office management. This key leadership role will be responsible for managing all aspects of accounting, financial reporting, compliance, and internal controls, while also supervising office staff and supporting project teams with accurate financial data. The ideal candidate will bring extensive experience in construction accounting, strong leadership capabilities, and a strategic mindset to help drive operational efficiency and financial performance.
Salary: $85,000 – $100,000 (commensurate with experience)
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Management & Accounting:
- Oversee all accounting functions including AP, AR, payroll, general ledger, and bank reconciliations.
- Manage payroll for approximately 150 employees, including certified payroll for public works projects.
- Perform job costing and maintain accurate financial tracking for multiple construction projects.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and relevant tax regulations.
- Monitor cash flow, budgeting, and forecasting to support strategic planning.
- Coordinate with external auditors and manage audit preparation and execution.
Construction-Specific Duties:
- Maintain and monitor Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and project profitability.
- Track and report on project budgets, change orders, and billing schedules.
- Collaborate with project managers to ensure accurate cost tracking and timely billing.
- Manage lien releases, subcontractor compliance, and contract documentation.
- Oversee financial aspects of bonding, insurance, and licensing requirements.
Office & Staff Management:
- Supervise and lead office staff, fostering a collaborative and efficient work environment.
- Oversee daily office operations and ensure professional workflow.
- Implement and maintain internal controls and procedures to safeguard company assets.
Process Improvement & Systems:
- Identify and implement improvements to accounting systems and workflows.
- Evaluate and upgrade financial software and tools to enhance reporting and efficiency.
- Develop and maintain policies and procedures for financial operations.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred but not required).
- Minimum 5 years of accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a construction environment.
- Strong knowledge of construction accounting principles, including job costing, WIP, and certified payroll.
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., Sage 300 Construction, QuickBooks, or similar) and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and leadership skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively across departments and with external stakeholders.
