Library Clerk

Under the general supervision of the Library Manager, performs routine manual and clerical work in the public library. The employee is responsible for shelving library materials and performing related tasks. Work is performed in accordance with well-defined procedures. Employees work under direct supervision, although they may operate with some independence once procedures are learned, with only occasional checks for adherence to prescribed standards. This position also requires proficiency in customer service and daily interaction with the public. Examples of Essential Job Functions Shelving books, CDs, magazines, etc. Reads shelves and places items in proper order as instructed. Straightens and shifts materials on library shelves. May assist patrons with finding library materials. Light cleaning, dusting, and straightening up. Perform other duties as apparent or assigned. Employment Standards and Qualifications Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to learn the Dewey Decimal system to the extent required for shelving books; good working knowledge of the alphabet; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; thoroughness; dependability. Education, Training, and Experience Preferred Experience Public Library working experience or other customer service experience working with the public. Required Qualifications Shall be available for off-hour work assignments. Physical and Environmental Characteristics Required Physical Activities Reaching, Pushing, Pulling, Lifting, Finger Dexterity, Grasping, Talking, Hearing, Seeing, Sitting, Walking, Stooping, Kneeling, Speaking, Climbing, Crouching, Standing, Grasping, Repetitive Motion. Physical Characteristics of the Job Medium work requiring the exertion of up to fifty (50) pounds of force occasionally and up to twenty-five (25) pounds of force frequently. Environmental Conditions The work is performed primarily inside an office and public service environment. The job requires sitting and standing for extended periods, and the work may expose the employee to unpleasant social situations, significant work pace pressure, and, at times, irregular work hours. Equipment and Materials Used Computer hardware and software, general office equipment, print and electronic reference materials, telephone, fax machine, postal equipment, copier, and auxiliary computer hardware.
