Medical Billing Specialist

Mental Health Support Services (MHSS) is the provider of mental health, developmental disabilities, and substance use disorder services for children and adults in Chesterfield County. Our Accounts Receivable Program is seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Medical Billing Specialist to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for managing the billing process, ensuring accurate claims coding, and timely submissions of claims to Medicaid, Medicare, and commercial insurance companies. Minimum Qualifications: Associate's degree in accounting, business administration or a related field; two years of experience in technical level accounting or bookkeeping work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Two or more years of experience as a billing specialist preferred. Certification in medical billing/coding preferred. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Working knowledge of the basic principles and practices of accounting. Ability to process transactions using automated systems; to perform mathematical calculations; to operate a personal computer and related software and other standard office equipment; to communicate effectively orally and in writing; to develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers. Advanced working knowledge of payers and payer protocols preferred. Proficiency with Microsoft Office preferred. Experience with an electronic health record preferred. Demonstrated strong communication and customer service skills preferred. Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment preferred. Attention to detail and organizational skills preferred. Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines preferred. Additional Requirements: Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check, and education/degree verification required. Duties include but are not limited to the following: Submits claims with proper coding; Reviews claims list to identify denials and rejections; Identifies and researches claims to correct and/or resubmit for reconsideration or appeal; Contacts insurance companies to identify and research claim denials; Utilizes payer portals and third-party websites such as Availity to complete claims research; Ensures timely follow-up on collection efforts and timely reimbursement for outstanding charges; Verifies patient insurance eligibility and benefits; and Performs other work as required.
