The Conflicts Counsel Unit (CCU) of the Cook County States Attorneys Office (CCSAO) seeks an Assistant States Attorney (ASA) to litigate a variety of civil lawsuits, including, but not limited to, Section 1983 Civil Rights, employment, tort, medical malpractice, complex class actions, and FOIA cases. The position primarily involves defending Cook County, its agencies, and its employees in civil matters in state and federal court. This is a full-time bargaining unit exempt position. Working Environment & Reporting Structure:

The ASA reports to the Supervisor of the CCU and collaborates with fellow ASAs, CCU clients, and agency representatives. Responsibilities

Manage a full caseload of matters in federal and state court, as well as before Illinois state agencies (e.g., the Illinois Department of Human Rights). Open new files; review transferred files; investigate claims; obtain and review documents; prepare client communications; communicate with clients and witnesses; file appearances; obtain and review documentary evidence and records; prepare internal legal memoranda and case summaries; draft, review, and file pleadings; prepare motions; conduct discovery (including depositions and expert depositions); argue in trial court; prepare dispositive motions; conduct settlement conferences; prepare for and try jury trials and arbitrations in state and federal court; defend or prosecute appeals if necessary. Participate in special projects involving complex matters in various courts and divisions of the Cook County Circuit Court and the Northern District of Illinois. Minimum Qualifications

Three (3) or more years of litigation experience in federal and/or state court (trial or appellate). Knowledge of federal and state civil practice and procedure; experience with complex legal issues, preferably involving constitutional issues and/or municipal law. Excellent judgment and discretion in matters of great importance and sensitivity. Strong verbal and written communication skills, solid work ethic, attention to detail, accountability, and interpersonal skills. Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school and active Illinois law license. Eligibility to be admitted to the General Bar and Trial Bar of the Northern District of Illinois. Preferred Qualifications

Five (5) or more years of litigation experience in federal and/or state court (trial or appellate). Familiarity with CCU areas including tort litigation, civil rights, federal/state constitutional law, class actions, labor and employment law, medical malpractice, workers compensation, and civil governmental practice. Substantial experience in fast-paced, high-profile litigation; experience drafting pleadings and briefs in state and/or federal court. Knowledge of the Freedom of Information Act and the Illinois Attorney Generals FOIA guidelines. Physical Requirements

Light work. Ability to lift up to 20 pounds; frequent lifting of up to 10 pounds; capacity to stand or walk for extended periods, and to sit for long periods with occasional pushing/pulling. If capable of light work, you can generally perform sedentary work as well, subject to limiting factors. EEO and Benefits
