BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc. is seeking a Senior Director, Technical Operations Sourcing & Procurement. The Global Sourcing and Procurement (GSP) organization drives procurement value to support stakeholders and organizational strategic objectives, leading transformation and category strategies that underpin BioMarin’s corporate strategy. The Senior Director will lead a team of procurement professionals focused on establishing and executing category strategies in support of the Technical Operations organization and managing a $600M+ annual spend. The Senior Director, Technical Operations Sourcing & Procurement will be part of the GSP Leadership Team and report to the Vice President of Global Sourcing and Procurement. The role collaborates with category leaders across GSP to ensure TOPS is fully supported and aligned with current and future Manufacturing Site strategic objectives. Responsibilities
Lead a team of procurement professionals supporting BioMarin and the Technical Operations Organization across multiple categories: Direct Materials (single-use technologies, resin, chemical & media), primary and secondary packaging, CMOs & CDMOs, construction and other capital spend, facilities management, real estate, and site services. Develop and execute industry-leading procurement practices; build deep relationships with stakeholders; drive innovation and continuous improvement in ways of working; mentor and develop the team. Collaborate with TOPS and GSP colleagues to ensure alignment with Manufacturing Site strategic objectives; participate as a key member of the TOPS Leadership Team. Strategize and lead S2P (Source-to-Pay) processes, including implementation of procurement technologies and standards; manage risk and savings programs. Drive supplier relationship management, negotiations, and performance improvement; deliver hard and soft savings and establish SLAs/KPIs. Maintain external perspective on industry trends and best practices; actively participate in industry organizations; ensure compliance with BioMarin policies and procedures. Strategy & Leadership
Develop and shepherd sourcing and category strategies that support BioMarin goals; design new approaches to create clarity and drive change. Manage senior stakeholders across functions; be the procurement accountability point for the Technical Operations Leadership team; build credibility with suppliers. Partner with Corporate Finance & TOPS Leadership on key initiatives; align with Finance and GSP goals; advocate for the GSP organization. Provide strong leadership to the team; contribute as a GSP Leadership Team member; stay informed on GSP capabilities and strategies. Maintain external networks to inform procurement practices and industry standards; ensure a Source-to-Pay mindset across the function. Operational Focus
Lead sourcing and category management strategies to drive savings and risk mitigation; support transformational projects and process improvements. Implement SRM with strategic suppliers; optimize the supply base with a unified BioMarin approach. Direct complex negotiations aligned with BioMarin’s operational and business goals. Define and track performance with SLAs/KPIs; develop multi-year opportunities roadmap. Influence S2P transformation efforts; collaborate across the value stream to optimize outputs. Ensure compliance with policies; collaborate with Quality; support internal audits as needed. Key Skills & Qualifications
Extensive senior procurement leadership experience in the pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry; strong executive presence and collaboration skills. Experience with procurement technology (preferably Ariba/SAP). Direct Materials, packaging, CMOs/CDMOs, facilities management, and site services knowledge; supplier management and complex contract negotiations expertise. Results-driven with growth mindset; excellent communication and cross-functional influence; high-energy, self-starter with business acumen. Experience in a global/matrix environment; strong networking and stakeholder relationship-building abilities. Analytical, written and verbal communication skills; ability to operate under high pressure and tight deadlines. Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Supply Chain Management or related field. MBA or related post-graduate qualifications are an advantage. Area of Specialization
Sourcing & Procurement, Direct Materials, Supply Chain. Global procurement and supply chain management experience in the pharmaceutical sector preferred. 15+ years in Procurement/Sourcing/Supply Chain; familiarity with procurement tools such as sourcing, analysis, contract negotiations, and supplier development; Ariba/SAP experience preferred. Proven ability to manage in-scope categories, build category strategies, manage stakeholders, and lead supplier relationships. Strong understanding of finance and contracting, with ability to assess business value and risk. Travel & Workstyle
Periodic travel to BioMarin sites and supplier locations. Hybrid work model with local presence; Novato campus onsite requirements 2x per week. Compensation & Benefits
The salary range is $212,000 to $290,000. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, life insurance; discretionary annual bonus and stock-based long-term incentives may apply, depending on role and location.
