Overview
Deputy Director of Communications at QB3-Central (UC Berkeley system). The role supports research, innovation, and entrepreneurship in life science and energy and materials technologies by developing and executing communications strategies for QB3-Central and Bakar Labs, including media outreach, content creation, website updates, and stakeholder engagement. Responsibilities
Lead media outreach: monitor QB3 and Bakar Labs media mentions, build relationships with reporters and media outlets, pitch and develop stories, and promote progress of tenant startups in coverage of investments, partnerships, and innovations. Generate high-quality content in short and medium formats (social media, event promotions, web profiles, news, event recaps) and source or format appropriate visual content. Manage social media accounts (LinkedIn, Instagram): monitor interactions, engage with the community, create posts, and amplify exposure for incubator tenant companies. Support the Director of Communications in updating QB3 and Bakar Labs websites; occasionally lead new web developments including sections and subsites. Support strategic planning of integrated communications to meet QB3 and Bakar Labs goals; identify stakeholders and audience segments and tailor approaches for print, email, web, photography, or audiovisual formats. Assist in communicating with QB3 campus detachments at Berkeley, UCSF, and Santa Cruz, as well as the UC Office of the President. Manage student workers generating written and visual content for websites and social media. Required Qualifications
Thorough knowledge of communications and media outreach, including written, visual, multimedia, and social networks. Strong writing skills for short posts to medium-length stories; ability to adapt voice for different situations. Experience creating, developing, and implementing short and long-term strategic communication plans. Proficiency with general office software and layout/graphic design software, ideally Adobe Suite. Experience with content-management systems, preferably Wordpress; ability to learn new systems. Ability to advise management on communications and media relations and respond effectively to sensitive issues. Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, and listening skills with political sensitivity; strong analytical, project management, and problem-solving abilities. Preferred Qualifications
Experience in biotech and/or climate tech spaces. Experience with UC Berkeley and/or other UC departments or comparable institutional knowledge. Experience working at a PR agency. Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience/training. Salary & Benefits
