The University of California, Berkeley seeks a strategic leader to oversee the Investigative Reporting Program (IRP) operations within the School of Journalism, working with the Chair of the IRP and the Managing Editor to advance the mission of the IRP and the School. Position Summary
The Director of Operations will operate with a high degree of knowledge, skill, autonomy and strategic expertise to oversee the full range of the IRP\'s operations to meet programmatic goals and objectives. The Director of Operations is a key member of the IRP leadership team. Responsibilities
Manage relationships and communications with established and prospective funders and donors. Conduct analyses on complex issues and recommend operational improvements. Prepare short- and long-range planning for administrative services, operations and process improvements. Manage resources and ensure efficient processes. Oversee all grants-, events- and project-related budgets, and coordinate payments with campus units or external entities (e.g., publishing partners). Manage an operational budget of approximately $1.5 million. Create annual and multi-year budgets from multiple funding sources, perform long-range planning, analyze budget implications for programming, and provide timely financial reporting and management in compliance with campus, State and Federal regulations. Focus on productivity, cost reduction, risk minimization and quality. Perform analyses to determine resource allocations on projects, spending trends and estimate savings from changes to practices. Support fundraising efforts through outreach, research, drafting and submitting proposals; coordinate with the School\'s Advancement team and campus development offices. Structure, oversee and track programmatic outcomes and budgets related to grant activity; monitor gifts and grants to ensure funds are spent per donor/funder intent; prepare grant reports; provide financial analyses to support planning and decision-making. Oversee budgeting, recruitment, hiring and onboarding of contracted staff and graduate student-reporters; track expenditures and perform budget reconciliations. Support student recruitment efforts by preparing materials and participating in recruitment events; provide guidance on business processes to graduate students. Hire, train and supervise part-time student employees; oversee the IRP website and external presence in coordination with the School\'s communications team. Promote IRP activities and stories; coordinate with the School\'s communications team to publicize accomplishments; draft newsletters or alumni outreach emails. Plan and oversee events and convenings that support the IRP\'s mission, including fundraising events and alumni events. May supervise one to two full-time staff and one or more student employees. Qualifications
Advanced interpersonal skills including verbal and written communication; ability to engage with diverse stakeholders with good judgment, discretion and confidentiality. Advanced knowledge of University rules, processes, budgets, accounting, fund management and personnel management. Strong strategic planning, analysis, problem-solving and customer service skills. Experience with event planning, fundraising processes, risk management, website considerations, accounting and contracts and grants regulations. Ability to quickly learn common University computer applications. Demonstrated ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality. Bachelor\'s degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training. Salary & Benefits
The budgeted annual salary range is $91,500.00 – $168,900.00. This is a 2-year, full-time (40 hours/week), contract appointment eligible for UC benefits with the possibility of extension; exempt, monthly-paid. 2-year contract with UC benefits; extension possible.
