Employment Type: Full-Time, Salary, Exempt Deadline to Apply: This application will remain open for 14 days, ending on September 23, 2025 Rate of Pay: $72,100 – $92,000 annually, commensurate with experience. The wage band is set and not subject to negotiation.

Job Purpose The Director of Individual Giving is responsible for developing and implementing programs and strategies to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major donors in support of Bishop Museum’s institutional priorities. These include advancing the Museum’s collections, educational programs, and research throughout Hawai'i and the Pacific.

The Director will bring demonstrated success in major gifts fundraising, strong organizational and communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively across departments. The role requires a critical thinker who is conversant with current technologies, comfortable with public presentations, and able to serve as both a spokesperson and champion for the Museum’s mission and priorities.

Duties and Responsibilities Identifies, cultivates, solicits, and stewards individuals and major gift donors and prospects; recommends and implements cultivation and solicitation strategies of individual donors and members currently engaged with the museum and identifies, engages and cultivates new donor prospects.

Develops and maintains a prospect management tracking system and communication strategy that supports proactive major gift fundraising.

Works collaboratively with the VP of Advancement & Marketing Communications and the rest of the advancement team on developing strategies for successful individual and major gift fundraising and achievement of departmental goals.

Assists various departments in the recognition and prioritization of institutional and departmental funding needs. Keep abreast of institutional and departmental priorities, public programs, events, and key initiatives.

Oversees maintenance of records, reports, documents, and contact details through a CRM platform, planning activities involving prospects and administration.

Manage a portfolio of fundraising prospects and relationships through face-to-face visits to bring major gift solicitations to closure.

Oversees donor stewardship strategy of individual donors, annual giving campaigns, and donor stewardship and cultivation events

Maintains working knowledge of current tax laws, investments, and planned giving opportunities; applies knowledge for prospect cultivation as appropriate.

Helps to maintain a sophisticated planned giving program for the Museum; cultivates prospects through targeted marketing efforts and educates prospective donors on planned giving vehicles.

Collaborates with others on the Advancement team on donor cultivation, stewardship, and recognition events/ activities.

Meets or exceeds annual fundraising goals as established in collaboration with the VP of Advancement & Marketing Communications.

Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications Required Qualifications:

Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in nonprofit development, with a proven track record in major gift fundraising

Strong writing skills, including the ability to prepare development communication pieces such as direct solicitation proposals, acknowledgments, letters of inquiry, and general correspondence

Ability to maintain composure under time constraints and uphold a professional demeanor when interacting with others

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with planned giving programs

Working knowledge of MS Office Suite and customer relationship management (CRM) software

Other Requirements Residence on the island of O’ahu required.

Flexibility in working hours, as some evening and weekend work is required.

Working Conditions Work is primarily performed in a professional office environment with frequent use of computers and CRM software. The role requires regular in-person meetings with donors, attendance at Museum programs and cultivation events, and occasional evening and weekend work to support fundraising activities. Some flexibility for remote work is available, in coordination with departmental needs.

Physical Requirements This position requires the ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods of time, as well as the ability to move about the Museum campus and event spaces. The role involves occasional lifting and carrying of materials such as event supplies, donor packets, or presentation equipment weighing up to 20 pounds. Regular communication in person, over the phone, and via email is essential, as is the ability to travel locally for donor meetings and events.
