Lead Software Engineer

This Lead Software Engineer role leads a team and owns the full software development lifecycle deliveryfrom design and architecture to testing, deployment, and maintenance. You'll drive technical strategy and solutioning across both customer-facing and internal applications, with a primary focus on building innovative products for our Merchant Payment Services group. These solutions empower merchants and business line users with seamless DIY and DIT digital experiences. The ideal candidate is a proactive collaborator with strong Agile experience and a passion for building scalable, resilient systems that elevate customer experiences. Key Responsibilities Lead a team of engineers in the design, development, and maintenance of software solutions for the Merchant Payment Services group, including customer and internal facing applications, that enable digital experiences for merchants, partners, and business line users. Own the full software development lifecycle using Agile methodologies for complex software systemsfrom architecture and design through coding, testing, deployment, and support. Collaborate with a cross-functional group of stakeholders, including Product Managers, UX Designers, Engineering, and Business through roadmap and feature definition, feasibility analysis, delivery planning, and execution. Architect and build solutions that provide best-in-class user experience, with relentless focus on resiliency, scalability, security, and performance. Apply Reliability Engineering principles to embed reliability, observability, and operational excellence into development processes. Champion engineering best practices through code reviews, mentoring, and continuous improvement initiatives. Ensure compliance and security standards are integrated throughout the development lifecycle in alignment with U.S. Bank policies. Basic Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience. Six to eight years of relevant experience. Preferred Skills/Experience: Strong proficiency in Agile development and DevOps practices, with excellent communication and collaboration skills. Proven experience partnering with Product Managers and cross-functional teams to define roadmaps, shape features, refine backlogs, and deliver user-centric solutions. Skilled in translating functional and non-functional requirements into scalable system designs. Deep understanding of architecture, design patterns, algorithms, and data structures, with the ability to clearly communicate technical solutions to diverse stakeholders. Demonstrated leadership in resolving complex technical issues, mentoring engineers, and ensuring delivery of high-quality software. Hands-on experience building secure, high-performance web applications and APIs using Java, Spring Boot, and RESTful services. Expertise in microservices architecture, including event-driven and asynchronous patterns, containerization, service mesh, and observability tools. Familiarity with Kubernetes, Docker/Rancher, and cloud platforms (AWS preferred, Azure acceptable). Strong database skills in Oracle and PostgreSQL, including data modeling and performance tuning; experience with Hibernate or similar ORM frameworks. Experience with testing frameworks such as JUnit, Karate, and Serenity. Front-end development experience using React and JavaScript. Proven track record of technical ownership and production support in a regulated environment, preferably within financial services. Location Expectations: This role offers a hybrid/flexible schedule, with an in-office expectation of 3 or more days per week and flexibility to work remotely on other days.
