Job Description Summary

This position provides instructional support to the Truck Driving program, Decision Driving, and the Truck Driving Contract Training, as well as other areas of the college as needed. Under the general direction of the Truck Driving Director, the Driver Trainer offers comprehensive hands-on training to develop skilled drivers capable of safely operating Commercial Motor Vehicles (CMV) and meeting industry workforce needs. The trainer will deliver appropriate instructional programs in a learning environment that encourages students to obtain their Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

Daytime shift: 6:30 am - 5 pm, Monday through Thursday. *Subject to change

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Monitor and train students in the Truck Driving program, WDDC, and Truck Driving Contract Training.
  • Schedule and conduct student road evaluations.
  • Train students with little or no experience in pre/post trip inspections, shifting, trailer coupling/uncoupling, driving, and other hands-on activities.
  • Assess students’ ability to safely operate CMVs on ranges and public roads, monitor progress, and provide feedback.
  • Participate actively as a team member in the Truck Driving program, WDDC, and Contract Training.
  • Provide training in emergency driving and skid control techniques as per curriculum.
  • Coordinate with Diesel and Automotive Departments to ensure equipment functionality.
  • Maintain the Truck Driving and WDDC driving facilities and ranges.
  • Administer third-party road tests as a CDL examiner.
  • Oversee safety and cleanliness of the safety bay and parking areas, and ensure proper storage of equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements.

Non-Essential Functions

  • Snow removal in winter.
  • Painting traffic lines on driving ranges.
  • Other duties as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Technical Diploma or Associate Degree in Transportation, AND
  • Three years of related experience, OR
  • Equivalent education, training, and experience.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid Class A CDL.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Subject to Motor Vehicle Records check.

Work Environment

  • Primarily in-person, with some virtual or hybrid elements.
  • Classroom and laboratory settings.
  • Occasional outdoor work in all conditions, day or night.

Physical Requirements

  • Extended sitting and mobility.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.
  • Climbing vehicle steps or ladders.
  • Repetitive motions without discomfort.
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills.
  • Travel for off-site teaching or professional development.
  • Ability to operate vehicles and equipment.

Additional Information

Starting pay: $27.47/hour. Compensation is based on experience, qualifications, and internal guidelines.
