Summary This position is responsible for the application of finish coatings to wood, steel, and other fabricated products. Position is expected to perform quality checks and ensure that all finishes meet customer expectations. Finisher is responsible for keeping the paint booth clean and organized, maintaining all spray and finishing equipment, and monitoring supply levels, before, during, and after completion of work. Qualifications High performance proficiency in applying both interior and exterior finish products to wood, metal, and other art and exhibit related materials and assemblies. Minimum 3 - 5 years of relevant finishing experience. Good knowledge of color mixing and color theory. Proficiency and experience using standard paint spraying equipment. Proficiency and experience using paint application equipment such as rollers and brushes. Proficiency and experience using and applying stains, pigmented top coats and clear coats. Proficiency in applying both solvent based and water borne products. Proficiency with safe handling of paints and solvents.Knowledge of the proper surface preparation of various materials and substrates. Familiarity and experience using powder coating equipment. Ability to research and select coatings appropriate to the application. Good troubleshooting and problem solving skills. Familiarity with standard shop tools and equipment. Active and clear communication skills. Ability to manage time and resources based on a dynamic production schedule Ability to work collaboratively. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Ability to drive and hold a current valid driver's license. Post-secondary education or equivalent experience in arts-related fields preferred. Responsibilities Preparing fabricated work for finishing, including sanding, cleaning and all necessary surface prep. Aid in the selection of best products and application methods and produce samples Research and read any applicable technical data sheets related to specific finishes. Maintain MSDS record system. Mixing, tinting and color matching. Application of finishes, including both solvent based and water borne stains, pigmented top coats and clear coats. Oversee anyone assisting in the finishing process. Performing quality control checks throughout the finishing process to ensure that all finishes meet customer expectations, and deciding on and executing any remedial action deemed necessary. Clean, organize, and maintain all spray and finishing equipment, and finishing spaces. Monitor and maintain ongoing supply levels. *All level II shop personnel are expected to display a firm grasp of basic general shop skills and work with moderate supervision and oversight. Level II shop personnel are also expected to either already be proficient in driving a forklift, or to successfully complete a forklift training program and pass a forklift certification test. Though the position is primarily a shop-based finishing position, it also includes being part of on-site installation teams, both locally and out of town. In addition to regular responsibilities, all shop personnel, at all levels, are expected to take part in occasional housekeeping and maintenance projects, and to contribute to the ongoing upkeep of the shop through regular organization and daily clean up. Valid CA driver's License required.
