Button Rock Deli has been a part of the Lafayette community for over a decade and is now entering a new chapter under new ownership. We are relaunching the bakery and deli with a focus on American artisan pastries and custom cakes, crafted with precision and artistry. Our cake department is known for creating unique celebration and wedding cakes built entirely from scratch with professional-level craftsmanship.
Position Overview:
We are seeking a Lead Cake Decorator to join our pastry team of 3-4 Cake decorator under the supervision of the Head Pastry Chef. This role requires a high level of artistry, technical skill, and attention to detail. You will handle the most challenging cakes, including weddings and complex custom designs, while helping guide other decorators and ensuring all cakes meet Button Rock's quality standards.
This is a full-time position where perfection and creativity are valued over speed, and every cake is treated as a one-of-a-kind piece.
Key Responsibilities:
Build and decorate custom cakes from start to finish, including baking, layering, filling, and decorating.
Specialize in high-skill cakes such as wedding and complex celebration cakes.
Work with buttercream, fondant, and specialty icings made in the production kitchen.
Handle sculpted cakes, sugar flowers, and advanced decorative elements.
Assist the Head Pastry Chef with production scheduling and planning for large/custom orders.
Supervise and train other cake decorators on techniques and standards.
Participate in customer consultations and tastings as needed.
Maintain a portfolio of designs and collaborate on seasonal/holiday offerings.
Ensure perfection and consistency in all cakes, prioritizing quality over speed.
Collaborate closely with the Pastry Sous Chef for sponge cake and filling production.
Maintain a clean, organized work area and handle all cakes with care and precision.
Qualifications:
Minimum 3 years of professional cake decorating experience.
Proven skill in wedding and custom cake artistry.
Expertise with buttercream, fondant, and various icing techniques.
Ability to sculpt and create detailed decorative elements.
Experience building tiered cakes (minimum 3-tier required).
Strong troubleshooting skills for structural and design challenges.
Leadership abilities to guide and mentor other decorators.
Professionalism and career-focused approach (not hobby-level work).
Collaborative, detail-oriented, and able to balance artistry with customer needs.
Schedule & Compensation:
Full-time position with a flexible schedule based on order demand.
Must have weekend and holiday availability; most custom orders are fulfilled on weekends.
Pay: $20/hour + tips (average $3–$4/hour).
2 week paid PTO.
