Overview

The Office of the New York State Attorney General (OAG) is seeking skilled attorneys with civil and/or criminal trial experience for its Adult Survivors Act (ASA) Unit in New York City, Poughkeepsie, and White Plains. The selected attorneys will be hired as Project Attorneys for a 24-month term, with the possibility to extend for an additional 12 months. The Project Attorneys will ensure ASA claims against the State of New York are properly litigated and defended in the Court of Claims. While assigned to a specific region, they will collaborate as a statewide team to develop consistent litigation strategies for efficient and effective defense of these claims.

Responsibilities

Handle all phases of litigation from inception through trial, including drafting pleadings and papers.

Conduct motion practice (research, drafting, oral arguments).

Manage discovery (interrogatories, paper/electronic document discovery, depositions).

Work with expert witnesses, negotiate settlements, and prepare for trial.

Represent the State of New York at mediation and trial.

Qualifications

At least three (3) years of post-graduate legal experience that includes civil and/or criminal trial experience.

Ability to handle defense of tort actions from commencement through discovery, motions, trial, and disposition.

Strong legal research, writing, analysis, negotiation, oral advocacy, and organizational skills.

Experience defending or prosecuting sexual assault cases (civil or criminal) is a plus.

Residence in New York State (or intent to become a resident) and admission to practice law in New York.

U.S. citizenship as required by Public Officers Law; a two-year commitment upon hire.

Salary and Location

Base pay range: $87,594.00/yr – $178,463.00/yr

Salary range (additional location pay): $83,594 – $178,463 plus $2,000 – $4,000 in location pay
