Introduction The City of Scottsdale is seeking a highly motivated and mechanically inclined craftsman to join the team as a Railroad Crew Chief at the McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park. The team consists of three (3) Crew Chiefs and one Engine & Carousel Mechanic. This is a dynamic and challenging position at one of our signature parks in Scottsdale with hundreds of thousands of annual visitors and over $2.8M in annual revenues. Duties will include operating and maintaining our historic 15” gauge railroad equipment, including steam, diesel, and electric locomotives. Designing, fabricating, and installing parts to keep our antique carousel and railroad in operation. The Railroad Crew Chief will help to troubleshoot and repair a variety of mechanical equipment at the park, from power washers to G Scale Trains, from fixing gates to repairing tracks.

The Railroad Crew Chief will be a voice in the planning and implementation of new ideas and new events. They will take a lead role in training new employees in the safe and efficient operation of our locomotives, rolling stock, and tools. Scottsdale desires a creative, skilled, and personable individual to make our railroad park a premiere family destination. The Railroad Crew Chief will be required to be a leader and take on new challenges, direct other City employees and be able to come up with creative solutions to unique problems. No two days are going to be the same.

Previous knowledge of railroad operations, steam locomotives, and AutoCAD are all preferred however not required.

Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience

A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) equivalent.

Four years of experience in automotive maintenance and repair.

Must have at least six months of Lead or Supervisory experience.

Any equivalent combination of education and / or job-related experience that meets the minimum qualifications may be substituted.

Preferred: Experience in machining, Tool & Die, welding, fabrication or a related field.

Licensing, Certifications and Other Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted driver's license with no major citations within the past 39 months prior to the start date. The Arizona Department of Motor Vehicles requires that out-of-state driver's licenses must be surrendered within 10 days of relocating to the State of Arizona.

Every person employed by the City of Scottsdale shall reside in the State of Arizona during his or her active employment by the City, regardless of whether the employee is approved to remote work.

Other pertinent licenses and / or certifications may be required of some positions depending on department / section assignment.

Essential Functions Performs duties and responsibilities commensurate with assigned functional area which may include, but are not limited to, any combination of the following:

Schedules, assigns and approves / disapproves a wide variety of repair, preventive maintenance, or quality assurance inspection tasks performed by variously skilled employees assigned to work on steam-powered locomotive engines and railroad-related equipment.

Diagnoses and repairs malfunctions with a wide variety of equipment, vehicles and machinery.

Develops and fabricates custom parts when necessary.

Works with vendors and contractors to engineer custom and replacement parts for scale locomotives, riding stock, railroad track and the Railroad Park’s antique carousel.

Uses and instructs others in the use of hand and power tools and equipment associated with either diesel and steam-powered locomotive engines and railroad-related equipment.

Performs and instructs others in the removal, tear down, rebuild, adjust, reinstall, align and mesh of locomotive components and assemblies.

Develops and maintains training program and procedures for all railroad related equipment and the park’s antique carousel. Includes developing standard operating procedures (SOPs) job safety analysis (JSAs), equipment qualification procedures and the execution of staff training for all related railroad equipment.
