Benefits: Paid Time Off Job Description: We are seeking an experienced Heavy Equipment Operator / Pipe Layer to support the excavation and underground utility installation associated with the construction of large water storage tanks. This position requires proficiency in trenching, grading, and laying water mains and related infrastructure, with a focus on precise execution, safety, and coordination with other trades. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience working on large-scale water infrastructure projects, including tank pads, valve vaults, ductile iron piping, and tie-ins to municipal systems. Key Responsibilities:Excavation and Grading: Operate heavy equipment (excavators, bulldozers, loaders, skid steers) to perform earthwork for tank foundations, piping trenches, and access roads. Excavate and backfill for tank bases, thrust blocks, and structural pads per engineering specifications. Ensure subgrade is properly prepared and compacted to meet compaction and slope requirements. Maintain clean and safe work zones around excavation areas. Pipe Installation: Install large-diameter water piping (e.g., ductile iron, HDPE) and associated appurtenances, including valves, tees, and bends. Lay and align pipe to proper line and grade using laser levels, transits, or string lines. Perform trench safety measures such as benching, sloping, and using trench boxes as required. Connect pipes using mechanical joints, flanges, or fusion welding. Perform hydrostatic testing and flushing as required by project specifications. General Duties: Read and interpret blueprints, tank foundation drawings, and civil site plans. Conduct daily pre-operation inspections on equipment and report issues promptly. Maintain equipment and tools in good working order. Work with crews to support tank construction schedule and sequencing. Adhere to all safety policies, site-specific requirements, and environmental standards. Qualifications: High school diploma or GED required. 3+ years of experience in excavation and pipe laying for water infrastructure projects. Proven ability to work with large-diameter pipe and tank foundation excavation. Valid driver's license; CDL and equipment certifications are a plus. Strong knowledge of trench safety, pipe bedding, compaction, and slope control. Familiarity with large water systems, municipal standards, and AWWA pipe installation practices. Ability to read and follow civil plans, profiles, and specifications. Physically capable of lifting 50+ lbs, working outdoors in all conditions, and navigating uneven terrain. Reliable, safety-minded, and able to work both independently and as part of a team. Preferred Qualifications: Experience on concrete tank construction projects. Confined space training and/or OSHA 10/30 certification. Experience with setting valve vaults, manholes, and concrete structures. Work Environment: Outdoor work environment in all weather conditions. Job sites may involve confined spaces, deep excavations, and coordination with crane or concrete crews.
