Job Summary The Leading by Example Analyst will be responsible for data collection and analysis related to MBTA’s Leading by Example (LBE) Program performance. They will collect energy data from various sources and produce analyses related to energy projects and progress toward LBE and MBTA goals. The role will also implement LBE projects, specifically energy efficiency and electrification initiatives that reduce GHG emissions and advance MBTA sustainability.

Duties & Responsibilities

Data collection, tracking and reporting: Oversee the collection of annual energy usage and other data for the LBE portfolio from all MBTA operations and facilities, and input data into the designated LBE reporting portal.

Quality control and analysis of data for reporting.

Report progress to LBE targets using MBTA databases.

Serve as the primary contact for LBE data requests and manage databases and spreadsheets related to agency and project data.

Support the Department of Capital Delivery and the Office of the Chief Engineer to project energy and emissions impacts from planned projects.

Develop annual reports on progress related to LBE Executive Order 594 and other pertinent metrics.

Develop MBTA energy and emissions data for the Global Warming Solutions Act reporting and other ad hoc requests supporting statewide initiatives.

Prepare graphs and charts for events, reports, and publications.

Assist with applications to incentives and grant programs, including project identification, review coordination, and grant management and follow-up.

Track and measure progress toward Executive Order 594 and other LBE clean energy and sustainability goals.

Improve transparency by communicating performance metrics through external reporting outlets, website content, and reports for partners, stakeholders, and the public.

Leverage data to inform MBTA Energy program priorities and develop modeling/analysis tools to support targets and opportunities.

Maintain and enhance data tools to help partners explore project impacts and savings.

Collaborate with MBTA regional and national partners to identify best practices and strategic approaches (e.g., US DOE, EIA, EPA, DOER, DCAMM, MWRA, APTA, etc.).

Energy Project Initiatives

Use energy data to identify MBTA sites needing energy use intensity improvements and emission reductions.

Manage ongoing, site-level evaluation for MBTA facilities to identify and address energy use changes.

Work with the Energy Conservation Specialist to analyze energy projects and apply for Utility Incentives.

Coordinate installation of energy projects by utility vendors to meet LBE goals, including EO594 requirements.

Conduct and supervise energy audits and scoping studies at MBTA facilities, coordinating site visits.

Assist in the sustainable design of new MBTA facilities.

Clean Transportation Data Initiatives

Maintain transportation-related data tools and documents, including Statewide Contract vehicle lists, EV model databases, and EV total cost of ownership calculators; create new evaluation tools as necessary.

Track compliance with the Fuel Efficiency Standard (FES) for the MBTA Fleet by coordinating vehicle purchases and evaluating compliance during and at the end of each fiscal year.

Support MBTA fleet clean transportation initiatives including vehicle electrification, EV station deployment, and identifying new technologies.

Other Program Duties

Participate in new LBE grant programs, program outreach, and ongoing management.

Participate in LBE meetings and site visits, including content development for regular LBE Council meetings.

Perform other duties and projects as assigned.

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science, Data Science, engineering, or a related field.

Experience with spreadsheets and databases (e.g., Microsoft Excel), including pivot tables; ability to create customized charts and tables that communicate complex data effectively.

Experience collecting data from diverse sources and maintaining large databases with quality control.

Ability to analyze data, draw conclusions, and make recommendations.

Ability to gather information from records and documents and by questioning individuals.

Knowledge of energy and emissions terminologies and experience managing energy and emissions data.

Understanding of clean energy and climate policies and technologies; knowledge of energy efficiency, electrification, and emissions-mitigating technologies and projects.

Experience working with utilities.

Ability to work with minimal supervision and take initiative; ability to work in a team with diverse stakeholders.

Ability to work efficiently under time constraints; strong organizational skills; ability to manage multiple projects.

Strong writing and communication skills for conveying technical issues to non-technical audiences.

Ability to interact with facility managers, financial officers, and energy/sustainability managers from agencies and higher education campuses.

Substitutions Include

High School Diploma or GED with seven years of related experience may substitute for a bachelor's degree.

Associate degree with three years of related experience may substitute for a bachelor's degree.

Preferred Experience and Skills

Experience with energy tracking platforms and data management software.

Basic knowledge of Massachusetts energy policies and DOER programs.

Knowledge of clean transportation technologies, including electric vehicles and charging stations.

Job Conditions

Ability to read, understand, and respond to instructions in English.

Must be at least 18 years old (except for approved internships/co-ops).

Ability to commute to MBTA work locations in the Boston, MA metro area as required.

Provide courteous and professional service to internal and external customers.

Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse team; uphold MBTA policies and EEO standards.

Ability to pass CORI and other background screenings; may include medical screenings.

Ability to work all shifts/locations as needed, including during severe weather or emergencies.

Intern/Co-op must be enrolled in an accredited program with GPA of 2.5+ and valid work authorization.
