The COO will serve as a key member of the executive leadership team, working closely with the CEO and other senior leaders to drive the operational success of the organization. The COO will be responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations, ensuring the effectiveness and efficiency of the organization\'s processes, and implementing strategies to enhance organizational performance. This role requires a strategic thinker with a strong background in nonprofit management, business management, operational excellence, and team leadership. Guided by our Survivor Advisory Board, we take a survivor-informed, trauma-responsive approach to every program, policy, and partnership. Our work spans three core initiatives : Prevention Education – Equipping students, educators, industries, and service groups with the knowledge and skills to recognize warning signs, build protective behaviors, and take action. Direct Services – Offering case management, education, and employment assistance to survivors and individuals at risk, including services through our drop-in center in Sacramento. Community Engagement – Mobilizing communities, hosting awareness events, and collaborating with policymakers to advance prevention-focused legislation. Specific job responsibilities Team management & culture – Lead and manage leadership staff, fostering a positive, trauma-informed, mission-driven culture. Serve as a culture carrier, ensuring organizational values are lived out in daily operations. Staff management – Provide leadership, guidance, and support to department heads and their teams. Talent development – Oversee staff development programs, including training, mentorship, and succession planning. Culture building – Foster collaboration, inclusivity, and a mission-driven culture. Implement supervision practices including relationship building, active listening, clear communication, and timely feedback. Provide coaching to resolve conflicts and support varying leadership styles. Cross-department collaboration – Implement policies and strategies that encourage cross-departmental collaboration. Facilitate calm, neutral, and equitable discussions when team dynamics are challenging. Operational leadership – Oversee day-to-day operations, ensuring efficiency and regulatory compliance. Develop and monitor operational strategies to support the mission. Day-to-day management – Oversee daily operations across programs, fundraising, development, marketing, finance, HR, IT, and facilities. Strategic planning – Drive and manage outputs for the annual strategic plan. Policy implementation – Develop and enforce policies and procedures for efficiency, compliance, and mission alignment. Leadership and stewardship – Provide effective, inspiring leadership and stewardship. Quality improvement – Lead a continuous quality improvement process focusing on systems / process improvement. Staff feedback – Promote ongoing opportunities for staff to provide feedback on program operations. Financial oversight – Support the CEO and Controller in budgeting and financial statement understanding; ensure nonprofit best practices align with strategic goals. Budget management – Develop, manage, and oversee the organization\'s budget with the Controller. Resource allocation – Ensure optimal allocation of financial and human resources. Financial controls – Establish and monitor internal controls to safeguard assets and sustain operations. Program implementation – Assist CEO and program leaders with operational efficiency of programs and alignment with mission and outcomes. Program oversight – Ensure programs align with mission, goals, and strategic plan. Program evaluation – Develop and implement systems to monitor and evaluate program effectiveness and impact. Innovation – Foster a culture of operational innovation to enhance service delivery and impact. Compliance and risk management – Ensure compliance with laws and nonprofit governance standards; identify and manage operational risks. Board liaison – Prepare reports for the board and participate in board meetings as needed. Ethical standards – Uphold ethical standards throughout the organization. External relations – Build strategic relationships with stakeholders, represent the organization publicly, and develop partnerships. Marketing – Demonstrate knowledge of marketing communications and oversee marketing activities; familiarity with social media, website, media relations. Requirements Minimum of 7–10 years in progressively senior operational or executive roles. Preferred : 5–7 years in a leadership position within a nonprofit, government agency, start-up, or mission-driven organization. Quantifiable outcomes for operational excellence from prior experience.
