Computer System Engineer - Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) Department Overview

The Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) supports and advances the University of Virginia's research mission by providing essential infrastructure, services, and guidance to faculty, staff, and research teams. This position will play a key role in supporting OVPR's technical infrastructure and collaborating with Information Technology Services (ITS) to ensure secure, reliable, and innovative solutions that meet the needs of the research enterprise. Position Summary

The Computer System Engineer will administer all aspects of a distributed computer system supporting OVPR's operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing OVPR's servers, maintaining their security and functionality, coordinating with ITS on system integration, and supporting cloud-based services. This includes planning and coordinating system utilization, upgrades, and security; performing growth analyses and capacity planning; and supporting OVPR's MSSQL server environment, including its data warehouse and reporting services. This role requires independent decision-making on non-routine tasks, serving as a technical resource, and providing guidance to others on complex problems and processes. This is a 2 year limited term position based on funding. Responsibilities

Administer OVPR's servers, ensuring security, functionality, and optimal performance. Support and manage OVPR's MSSQL server environment, including data warehouse and reporting services (SSRS). Plan and coordinate system utilization, upgrades, capacity planning, and security measures. Provide solutions for system administration and client/server or application performance issues. Coordinate integration with cloud services, including ETLs, SSO, and vendor/ITS-supported connectivity. Perform application installation, maintenance, user training, and support as required. Document OVPR infrastructure, systems, and processes for long-term maintainability. Serve as OVPR's Local Support Partner (LSP): manage patching, laptop imaging, and software implementation (e.g., Intune). Administer key applications including Zoom.gov, DocuSign, COI, PAC, Visual SVN, IIS, Scribe, Redwood, and others. Manage user accounts, onboarding/offboarding processes, and certificate management for OVPR systems. Lead or coordinate projects to meet current and future technical needs. Collaborate with ITS, vendors, and internal teams to ensure aligned and effective solutions. Train and mentor colleagues on non-routine problems, work processes, and policies. Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS, Computer Engineering, or a related field. At least three years of relevant experience. (Relevant experience may substitute for a degree.) Preferred Qualifications

Experience with MSSQL server administration, including data warehousing and SSRS. Familiarity with cloud-based integration, ETLs, and SSO. Proficiency with systems such as Intune, Visual SVN, IIS, or similar platforms. Strong documentation, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills. Experience supporting a research or higher education environment. Physical Demands

This position primarily involves work at a desk using standard office equipment. The role may occasionally require movement of equipment up to 25 pounds and working outside normal business hours to address critical issues or perform upgrades. Salary Range
