Overview
MedStar Health is looking for a Patient Care Technician to join our team at MedStar Washington Hospital Center within our ER. As a Patient Care Technician, you will function as a member of the patient-centered care team to provide direct patient care activities under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or medical staff/providers. Assists nursing and medical staff with procedures and/or tests, and patients with ADLs (Activities of Daily Living). Performs specific care activities such as specimen collection, phlebotomy, intravenous (IV) catheter insertion, electrocardiography (EKG), and documentation in the health record. Primary Duties Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs) and personal hygiene, including bathing, mouth care, dressing, skin care, positioning, feeding, ambulation, toileting, and range of motion activities. Assist with patient mobilization and rehabilitation, use of crutches and walkers, and transfer/transport of patients in wheelchairs and stretchers. Collect specimens; perform venipuncture/phlebotomy; obtain EKGs; apply electrodes and initiate physiologic monitoring equipment; insert IV catheters, change IV sites and dressings, and inspect IV sites. Assist in the measurement and documentation of patient intake and output; accurately take and record vitals, height and weight, pulse oximetry, point-of-care and waived testing, and other pertinent information in the health record. Perform routine treatments/activities identified by unit/hospital policy, including Foley catheterization/care, suctioning, simple dressing changes and wound care, turning/positioning, postmortem care and transportation of the body to the morgue, maintenance of drainage tubes, oxygen equipment, shave preps, and assistance with traction, casts, splints, slings, TED/SCD supports, and other immobilization equipment. Maintain patient comfort, confidentiality, and dignity; perform patient observation duties (including 1:1 observation) and application of restraints as needed. Prepare patients to be seen by providers; assist providers and registered nurses in examinations and procedures; conduct rounds on assigned patients; report actual and potential problems to the RN and care team; ensure complete hand-off to oncoming shift and obtain hand-off from outgoing shift. Initiate and assist in CPR; participate in patient/family teaching; respond to questions from patients, families, and visitors; refer to appropriate personnel when necessary. Attend staff meetings, ongoing educational offerings, and participate in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams; maintain cleanliness and safety of the patient environment. Assist with environmental services support such as linen management, trash removal, cleaning patient rooms; transport/escort patients during discharges or medical appointments; complete errands and stock equipment and supplies; maintain orderly supply and utility rooms.
Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED. Completion of a Certified Nursing Assistant program and active CNA certification, an experienced MedStar Washington Hospital Center nursing assistant, or the equivalent; or completion of a national Registered Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic program/course with at least six months or more experience as an EMT, CCT, or EMTP; or Nursing Student (RN Program) with completion of at least one year of clinical rotation or a graduate of an approved nursing program (LPN or RN). BLS - Basic Life Support.
Compensation
This position has a hiring range of $19.927 - $29.982 #J-18808-Ljbffr
