Overview: The Bakery Shift Manager is responsible for managing all production shifts within the Bakery department, ensuring consistent performance, process adherence, and alignment across 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shifts. This role oversees supervisors and leads, drives efficiency, enforces safety and food quality standards, and ensures smooth handoffs between shifts. A critical part of the role is being present on the floor to monitor operations, coach employees, and ensure accountability.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Safety & Compliance Lead with a safety-first mindset, modeling behaviors that prioritize OSHA, GMP, and company safety standards. Conduct daily safety checks, enforce PPE use, and promptly correct unsafe conditions or behaviors. Facilitate safety talks and ensure shift supervisors deliver toolbox talks and training consistently. Partner with EHS to complete investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective actions for incidents. Quality Assurance & Food Safety Ensure compliance with all FDA, USDA, SQF, and internal food safety standards across all shifts. Work closely with QA to address quality issues, deviations, or customer complaints. Verify shift teams follow SOPs, HACCP plans, and allergen control programs consistently. Support product audits, ensuring corrective actions are implemented and standardized across shifts. Production Leadership Oversee daily operations in the bakery across all shifts, ensuring production schedules are met. Maintain at least 70% floor presence, observing processes, troubleshooting, and supporting supervisors. Coordinate production priorities with planning and ensure efficient line changeovers and setups. Approve shift schedules, overtime, and daily labor allocations to balance workload. Cross-Shift Communication & Alignment Facilitate structured shift handover meetings to ensure accurate communication of priorities, issues, and follow-ups. Standardize reporting methods across shifts to ensure consistent performance tracking. Document and escalate recurring issues, ensuring ownership is assigned and follow-up actions are completed. Operational Excellence & Efficiency Monitor and analyze shift KPIs such as yield, downtime, throughput, scrap, and labor utilization. Partner with Continuous Improvement to implement Lean tools (5S, Kaizen, Standard Work) across all shifts. Lead root cause problem-solving for recurring issues, ensuring corrective actions are applied consistently. Manage bakery department costs, staying within labor and material budgets. Employee Leadership & Development Supervise and coach bakery shift supervisors, team leads, and frontline employees. Provide regular performance feedback, evaluations, and recognition across shifts. Identify skill gaps and coordinate training to support cross-training and employee growth. Promote engagement through consistent communication, fair treatment, and recognition of team contributions. Emergency Response & Crisis Management Act as the primary leader in emergency situations within the bakery department. Ensure incident response protocols are followed and senior leadership is informed immediately. Coordinate recovery actions to minimize downtime and restore safe operations.
Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Business, Engineering, or related field (preferred). Equivalent supervisory experience will be considered. 3–5 years of experience in bakery or food production, with proven success managing multiple shifts. Strong knowledge of bakery manufacturing processes and equipment. Familiarity with Lean, Six Sigma, or other CI methodologies. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively across shifts and departments. Bilingual skills (English/Spanish) a plus. Proficiency in ERP/CMMS systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
Physical Demands Frequent Movement:
Regularly required to move around the facility to inspect equipment, supervise activities, and monitor the work environment. This includes walking, standing, and occasionally climbing ladders or stairs. Manual Dexterity:
Frequently required to use hands and fingers to handle, operate, or feel tools and equipment. This may include tasks such as turning screws, operating machinery, and manipulating small components. Lifting and Carrying:
Occasionally required to lift, move, and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds, including tools, equipment parts, and materials necessary for maintenance tasks. Safety Awareness:
Constant vigilance to maintain personal safety and the safety of the team. This includes wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and adhering to all safety protocols and guidelines.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This position works in an office and a manufacturing environment with variable temperature and loud noises from machinery and equipment alarms. The incumbent will be exposed to loud noises and alarms from equipment and machinery.
