Job Summary Evaluates and makes decisions on complex residential and consumer loan applications, applying expert knowledge of portfolio and investor guidelines, internal policies, and regulatory requirements. Exercises advanced credit judgment to balance risk management with sound lending decisions while providing support to internal team members throughout the loan process.

Essential Job Functions Serves as a resource for junior underwriters and lending staff providing mentorship, training, and second-level reviews, as needed. Reviews and underwrites mortgage and consumer loan applications within delegated authority including highly complex transactions. Analyzes credit reports, income documentation, asset statements, appraisals, title work, and other supporting documents to assess loan eligibility. Ensures compliance with internal lending policies and procedures, Government-Sponsored Enterprises (GSE), such as the Federal National Mortgage Association (FNMA) and Freddie Mac (FHLMC), investor guidelines, and federal and state regulatory requirements. Issues loan approvals, suspensions, or denials with clear and concise conditions or reasons. Maintains current knowledge of portfolio and investor guidelines, regulatory requirements, and industry trends to ensure compliance, support sound decision-making, and mitigate risk. Works closely with loan officers, processors, and other team members to facilitate timely loan decisions and resolve underwriting issues. Maintains high standards of documentation and ensure files are audit ready. Responds to internal and external audits or quality control reviews by providing documentation, supporting information, and other materials as appropriate based on the scope and nature of the request. Supports ongoing improvement of underwriting procedures and operational efficiency by offering actionable feedback to management and collaborating across teams to enhance workflows and performance. Promotes a strong risk and compliance culture by adhering to regulatory requirements, following internal policies and procedures, identifying potential issues, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure consistent application of risk-mitigation practices across the organization. Actively stays current on all Bank products, services, procedures, policies, and applicable regulatory and compliance requirements by regularly attending team meetings, completing mandatory training on schedule, and applying knowledge to ensure accuracy and compliance in daily operations. Ensures adherence to federal and state laws, regulations, and bank policies by preventing violations, minimizing risks, and safeguarding the Bank’s interests. Verifies transactions and account balances, ensuring compliance with bank policies and state and federal regulations and the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), as applicable to the role. Other Duties Performs additional duties, as directed by management. Complies with all related consumer regulatory requirements. Requirements:

Qualifications, Experience, and Education High school diploma or equivalent. Associate or Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, or a related field preferred. Federal Housing Authority Direct Endorsement (FHA/DE) and/or Veterans Affairs Staff Appraisal/Leder Appraisal Processing Program (VA SAR/LAPP) certifications preferred. Minimum 7 years of experience in mortgage underwriting, including knowledge of agency and investor guidelines. Excellent underwriting expertise including strong knowledge of residential and consumer loan products, sound risk assessment, and the ability to provide guidance and support to underwriting and lending staff. Excellent knowledge of banking and lending regulations. Excellent knowledge of credit, income, assets, and collateral analysis principles. Demonstrated analytical thinking, sound judgment, and problem-solving skills. Demonstrated communication skills with the ability to explain underwriting decisions to internal team members. Excellent attention to detail. Proficient in mortgage loan origination systems (LOS), automated underwriting systems (AUS), and office software including word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation applications. Ability to manage multiple files under time-sensitive deadlines. Ability to adapt to frequent change and work with urgency and accountability in a fast-paced, production-oriented environment.
