The Recreation Leader I
Child Care Assistant is responsible for assisting with before- or after-school programs at one of the following locations: Madrona K-8 School, Mountlake Terrace Elementary School, or the Recreation Pavilion. This position supports a variety of youth activities for children ages 512, including arts and crafts, games, sports, special events, and other recreational and leisure activities. The Recreation Leader I reports directly to the Recreation Programmer and Coordinator and must demonstrate strong organizational skills, leadership ability, and a high level of responsibility. Work hours and location are subject to change. Availability required: 7:009:30 A.M. or 2:005:30 P.M., MondayFriday. Duties include, but are not limited to: Lead youth recreation programs, arts and crafts, games, sports, special events, and leisure activities. Provide customer service to patrons of the community. Monitor and maintain cleanliness of facility. Perform emergency and rescue procedures. Assist with daily site operations, including opening and closing facility as assigned. Complete reports and file paperwork as needed. Actively supervise and promptly engage with children in busy, active settings. Establish and maintain positive, cooperative relationships with coworkers, school staff, and families. Adapt to changing situations and environments, responding calmly and appropriately to children's needs. Lead and participate in activities that support a safe, fun, and inclusive environment for all participants. Follow verbal and written instructions and learn site-specific procedures. Maintain accurate records and promptly report incidents, concerns, or facility issues. Take responsibility for supporting the health, safety, and welfare of all participants in alignment with City and state standards. Supervision received: Directly report to Recreation Supervisors, Recreation Programmers, Recreation Coordinators, and Recreation Leader IIs. Supervision exercised: None. Working conditions and physical requirements include: Perform work primarily in an indoor facility, with some outdoor activities in parks. Sit or stand for extended periods of time. Lift, move, and carry up to 50 pounds. Navigate uneven terrain such as grassy fields, dirt paths, or rough ground during outdoor activities. Experience minimal exposure to cleaning agents and pool chemicals (e.g., chlorine) during routine facility maintenance. Set up and take down tables, chairs, or recreational equipment. Travel between multiple program locations or sites within the City as required. Minimum qualifications include: Age 18 or older with interest in working with youth. High school diploma or equivalent. Pass a criminal background check and fingerprinting. Written results of current TB skin test. Current CPR and First Aid certification, or ability to obtain within 30 days of hiring. Completion of 30 hours of State Training and Registry System (STARS) and the basic licensing guidebook training or proof of educational exemption as outlined by the Washington State Association for the Education of Young Children within 6 months of hire. Compensation: Hourly wage range: $18.15 - $22.31 (non-benefitted). We share the full pay range to be transparent, but starting compensation is offered between the minimum and midpoint of the range, based on skills and experience.
