General Description and Classification Standards
The Watershed Construction Maintenance Worker I performs semiskilled construction and/or maintenance work in support of the wastewater collection system and/or the water distribution system for the Department of Watershed Management in the division of Linear Infrastructure Operations. Responsible for operating heavy equipment, including dump trucks, backhoes, and skid loaders, alongside hand and power tools to ensure the safety and efficiency of the operation. Generally, works as part of a work crew. Work is performed frequently in cooperation with skilled trade employees, experienced equipment operators, technicians, or crew supervisors.

Responsible for operating heavy equipment, including dump trucks, backhoes, and skid loaders, alongside hand and power tools to ensure the safety and efficiency of the operation. Generally, works as part of a work crew. Work is performed frequently in cooperation with skilled trade employees, experienced equipment operators, technicians, or crew supervisors.
Supervision Received
Works under direct supervision and follows standardized procedures and written instructions to accomplish assigned tasks, usually as part of a work crew.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Completes assigned work orders efficiently and effectively; works with supervisor to prioritize work orders; works in a safe and organized manner to ensure safety for self, crew, and the public and to complete assignments correctly and on time.
- Perform skilled construction and maintenance work supporting various public works projects, including street construction, water, and wastewater system operations, and building maintenance.
- Execute assigned tasks using power and hand tools, as well as light, medium, and heavy-duty construction equipment.
- Assist in prioritizing and completing work orders efficiently and effectively.
- Clean catch basins, remove debris from sidewalks, and ensure the safety of work areas for both crew members and the public.
- Conduct pre-trip inspections on vehicles.
- Perform general maintenance tasks such as asphalt repair, landscaping, and basic cuts on various surfaces.
- Assist Crew Supervisors I’s & II’s with duties as needed and attend safety classes and meetings regularly.
- Coordinate with Crew Supervisor I’s & II’s to determine daily duties and ensure availability of necessary materials and supplies.
- Perform tasks related to pre-tripping vehicles, including checking materials needed for jobs and inputting job locations into GPS for efficient navigation.
- Set up safety cones and ensure the safety of work areas before beginning maintenance tasks.
- Clean-up work areas after completing tasks, maintaining cleanliness and orderliness. Collects scrap and leftover materials; blows debris from sidewalks.
- Check with supervisors daily to determine assigned tasks and ensure proper preparation.
- Conduct tasks related to unblocking service cleanouts, locating sources of spills, and clearing debris from catch basins and storm lines.
- Diagnoses and addresses causes of cave-ins and operate equipment such as Vactors and hand rods to remove blockages in service lines.
- Safeguard work areas and flag traffic to ensure crew safety during maintenance activities.
- Unstop sewers and house connections, cleans catch basins, repairs cave-ins, locates water service connections and water main lines; marks service connections, water mains and sewer lines.
- Checks utility truck to assure that proper equipment and tools are present and in working order; requests approval for necessary materials to complete assigned work orders.
- Maintains a safe and organized work area. Secure and store tools.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of department policies and procedures: Knowledge of general site safety as it pertains to water/wastewater operations and maintenance. Methods, products, tools, and equipment used in water/wastewater maintenance and construction work, including basic mathematical principles.
- Skill: operating a variety of light-to-heavy power equipment (jackhammer); maintenance of tools and equipment (hydraulic excavator, concrete socket).
- Ability: to understand and apply pertinent policies, procedures, and regulations; to perform maintenance activities involving skills in the functional fields to which assigned; ability to communicate diplomatically with crew members, successfully address concerns; ability to adapt to changes in the work environment.
Minimum Qualifications – Education and Experience
- High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
- No prior experience required.
Preferred Education & Experience
- 6 months of experience in construction and/or maintenance in a water distribution or wastewater collection system.
Work Environment
Required physical, lifting, and sensory capabilities are requirements to perform the job successfully. Typical environmental conditions are associated with the job.
Lifting Requirements
Heavy work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
