Provide in-house legal services, with an emphasis on public utility regulatory matters and litigation, for the benefit of Hawaiian Electric, Maui Electric and Hawaii Electric Light (the Companies) and monitor work assigned to outside counsel. Essential Functions

Provides legal services, advice and practical solutions related to public utility regulatory, litigation, and related issues affecting the Companies; including assessment of legal/regulatory compliance and business risk; representation before government agencies and in court; preparation of legal documents, pleadings, memoranda, motions and regulatory filings; preparation of rate case filings and participation in all aspects of rate case hearings; handling various litigation matters from inception to judgment and appeals; advising officers, managers and employees on legislation, legal trends, cases and policies; assisting in policy development and strategy; advocating the Companies\’ positions externally. Provides services in other areas including business law (contracts and corporate liabilities), labor and employment law, environmental regulation, real property, securities, finance, compensation and benefits, legislation and litigation; develops preventative law programs and training; advises on new laws and policies. Provides work direction and monitors outside counsel to ensure efficiency and value; manages costs and guides Legal Assistants. Participates on task forces, committees and special projects; communicates legal issues and risks to senior management, including presentations. Assists in developing policies, procedures and systems for legal services; performs other duties as needed. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge Requirements Law degree, Hawaii Bar admission and license to practice in Hawaii (license in good standing elsewhere acceptable pending admission). Thorough knowledge in commercial and business law; general knowledge of listed areas with specialized knowledge in one or more areas. Knowledge Preference Specialized knowledge in public utility regulation; familiarity with Hawaii Administrative Rules Chapter 16-601 or similar rules; specialized knowledge in litigation and related procedural rules. Broad knowledge of energy law and commercial/business law. Skill Requirements Ability to work independently, manage time, meet deadlines and deliver high-quality work with minimal supervision. Strong business and legal judgment; strategic thinking; clear and persuasive communication (verbal and written). Analytical, organizational and conceptual skills; ability to research and resolve legal issues; flexibility in a dynamic environment; ability to make quick decisions on routine topics. Experience Requirements Minimum of 4 years of legal experience required; experience concentration in public utilities regulatory law and/or litigation preferred. Experience Preference Experience with public utility commissions, consumer advocates and legislative bodies; experience appearing before courts and agencies; all aspects of litigation from inception to judgment and appeals. The hiring range for the Associate General Counsel (Litigation & Regulatory) is $138,600 to $180,200. The hiring range for the Senior Associate General Counsel (Litigation & Regulatory) is $156,300 to $207,300. Placement depends on skills and qualifications. About Hawaiian Electric Companies
