Overview

National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is seeking a Development Director to manage planning, coordinating, and executing fundraising activities including major gifts, annual fund, planned giving, special events, and capital campaigns. The position works with the NRAO Director and the Assistant Director for Education and Public Outreach. A major project is a capital campaign to reinvent the visitors center as a modern interpretive facility. This position is funded by AUI Corporate support and may be based in New Mexico (Santa Fe), Albuquerque, or Socorro. What You Will Be Doing

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Collaborate with the AUI President and the NRAO Director to establish annual fundraising goals. Develop, plan, manage, and coordinate all fundraising activities (major gifts, annual fund, planned giving, special events, membership programs, capital campaigns) to meet annual goals. Identify and evaluate giving potential of prospects; develop cultivation and solicitation strategies. Solicit, cultivate, qualify a portfolio of donors; manage relationships through face-to-face visits and bring gift solicitations to closure. Advise on giving options to maximize benefits. Proactively manage prospect pipelines and tracking; ensure effective record keeping and reporting aligned with metrics. Build relationships with community stakeholders to support fundraising goals. Arrange meetings and events with leaders, donors, and volunteers; coordinate agendas and participation. Craft development communications to promote the organization to donors and raise public awareness of fundraising activities. Prepare major gift proposals, letters, and stewardship materials; coordinate materials for donors. Identify, enlist, motivate, and support volunteers for major solicitations. Deliver presentations related to fundraising; provide education and training to staff and volunteers on philanthropy. Coordinate the design, printing, and distribution of marketing materials for development efforts in coordination with other communications. Work with consultants on prospect research as needed. Work Environment

The Development Director works with a high degree of independence. Typical duties include desk work with standard office equipment and occasional travel to AUI headquarters in Washington, DC and NRAO sites and facilities. Who You Are

Bachelors degree in communications, business administration, or a related field. Five years of progressive fundraising experience with some major gifts experience. CFRE certification is not required but may be beneficial. Competency Summary

Knowledge and experience in fundraising techniques, especially major gifts. Interest in science, engineering, mathematics, and education preferred. Knowledge of federal and state charity-related legislation and events management; volunteer resource management. Strong ethics and alignment with organizational values. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and web-based tools (e.g., Visio, SharePoint). Excellent written, interpersonal, and verbal communication skills; ability to motivate staff and volunteers.
