Overview

Group Leader - Advanced Manufacturing and Materials Processing Section at Physics World. This role provides leadership for R&D activities in Advanced Manufacturing, Additive Manufacturing, Process Engineering, Responsive Materials, Functional Materials, Materials Formulation, Polymer Science and Engineering, Microencapsulation, and/or Electrochemistry within the Advanced Manufacturing and Materials Processing Section (AMMP) of the Materials Engineering Division (MED). The position is in the Engineering Directorate and includes a technical programmatic project assignment within the division. The role may be filled at the SEL.3 or SEL.4 level based on knowledge and related experience. This position offers a hybrid schedule with in-person and virtual work options, including the flexibility to work from home some days per week. Responsibilities

Provide leadership, supervision, and technical, strategic, and administrative direction to a multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers to achieve project/program goals and objectives. Collaborate with Project Leaders to identify workforce needs and lead recruitment, training, career development, performance management, mentoring, coaching, and annual performance reviews as needed. Establish project objectives, technical direction, workload planning, assignment of work, milestone tracking, and ongoing performance feedback in coordination with Engineering Center Leaders and Section Leaders. Provide technical, safety, and security leadership to ensure compliance with safety and operational standards. Advise and evaluate staff on the execution of technical work through formal reviews. Lead and participate in peer reviews of complex engineering designs, provide technical analysis, and apply innovative methods to ensure technical excellence. Present and explain technical updates to senior leadership, customers, and external sponsors. Foster a positive work environment and morale; support the section leader to address organizational needs and contribute to achieving organizational goals. Perform other duties as assigned. Work with Division Leader and Section Leader on high-level goal setting and strategic planning for long-range goals; identify new opportunities. Develop solutions to highly unusual and complex issues requiring in-depth analysis and innovative methods. Serve as a subject matter expert in program meetings, reviews, and committee activities, both internal and external to the Laboratory. Pilot change by developing new projects or programs, modifying approaches, and guiding customer requirements; drive process improvements across stakeholders and provide strategic technical advice. Attend to additional responsibilities as assigned. Qualifications

Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance (U.S. Citizenship required). Bachelors degree in Electrical/Mechanical/Chemical/Material Science and Engineering, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Advanced knowledge and significant experience in one or more technical areas such as advanced materials, advanced/additive manufacturing processes, manufacturing process optimization, project engineering, polymer science, or computational design. Experience collaborating with technical partners to lead complex projects, including workforce planning, milestone tracking, and performance feedback. Experience delivering technical presentations and participating in reviews to identify needs and develop practical solutions for program customers. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to develop and implement solutions for complex technical challenges. Proven leadership of a technical team, including training, coaching, team building, and performance management. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects, adapt to changing priorities, and keep management informed. Advanced communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills to effectively present and advise senior management and sponsors. Desirable and Additional Information

Masters Degree or Ph.D. in Electrical/Mechanical/Chemical/Bioengineering, Materials Engineering, or related field. Experience with LLNL policies, procedures, and design safety standards. Position is open to Lab employees and external candidates as a Career Indefinite role.
