The Department of Recreation & Wellbeing provides competitive and recreational opportunities for students, faculty, staff and campus-affiliated community members. The department offers a wide range of recreational activities and equipment, including 30 sports clubs and extensive programs. Position Summary

Camp Counselors, also known as Group Leaders and Instructors in our youth programs and summer camps, deliver high-quality instruction and create an engaging experience for youth participants. They develop age-appropriate lesson plans, provide constructive feedback, and maintain safe, clean, and inclusive camp spaces. They may also take on other program-related responsibilities as needed. Responsibilities

General Supervision: ensure camper safety, manage risks, and facilitate engaging downtime activities. Build positive relationships with campers and address individual needs to support growth and well-being. Encourage healthy risk-taking and skill development in a supportive environment. Maintain attendance records and manage transitions between activities. Safely supervise campers during transitions, water/bathroom breaks, and travel between locations. Assist campers with personal belongings, lost-and-found items, hydration, sunscreen application, and waste disposal. Support campers in problem-solving and conflict resolution; provide guidance to empower decision-making. Supervise and mentor Junior Counselors, Counselors-in-Training, and Campers in Leadership Training (CILTs). Inspire participation, teamwork, and enthusiasm in all camp activities. Program Instruction & Facilitation

Teach age-appropriate skills and activities in a structured, progressive sequence or assist as directed by supervisors. Develop and submit detailed lesson plans for each activity session; collaborate to design progressive lessons, aligned with campers ages and skill levels. Lead organized, engaging classes with active camper participation and creative activities. Provide specialized instruction to children ages 514 in areas such as archery, arts and crafts, sports, games, music, nature studies, leadership, and more. Engage with campers throughout activities to foster an inclusive environment. Incorporate camp values and life skills into lessons in a developmentally appropriate way. Administrative

Organize and maintain equipment, materials, and supplies; keep them in designated locations. Complete required paperwork accurately and on time (training docs, timesheets, lesson plans, certifications). Submit incident/accident reports promptly as required. Conduct daily safety and cleanliness checks in activity areas and report issues as needed. Miscellaneous

Assist with camper check-in/check-out. Promote theme days and camp traditions to foster community. Support campers in making friends and enjoying the camp experience. Share ideas to improve camp operations; participate in staff meetings and events as assigned. Fill staffing needs across Berkeley Youth Recreation programs as directed. Contribute to a supportive, inclusive environment encouraging participation. Required Qualifications

Knowledge of youth recreation programs, program planning/development, structures, classroom management, and youth learning styles. Service orientation, judgement, critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving in varied environments. Ability to work effectively across organizational levels; strong verbal and written communication skills. Proficiency with basic computer applications; ability to learn campus policies. Red Cross Infant/Child/Adult CPR certification. Preferred Qualifications

At least one year of experience leading recreational programs for youth. Some college or degree (Associate/Bachelors). Certification to instruct in applicable recreational sports or equivalent experience. Salary & Benefits
