Water And Sewer Maintenance Worker
The Water and Sewer Maintenance Worker performs skilled and semi-skilled labor in the construction, repair, and maintenance of the city's water distribution and wastewater collection systems. This position is responsible for ensuring safe and efficient delivery of water services and proper wastewater collection by maintaining lines, mains, hydrants, valves, meters, pumps, lift stations, and related infrastructure.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Installs, repairs, and maintains water mains, service lines, meters, hydrants, and valves.
- Installs, cleans, and repairs sewer mains, manholes, and service connections.
- Performs leak detection, line flushing, and water sampling to ensure water quality standards are met.
- Operates, maintains, and repairs lift stations, pumps, and other wastewater collection system equipment.
- Responds to water and sewer service calls, including emergency repairs and after-hours work as required.
- Reads and records water meters; assists with meter replacements and testing.
- Assists with utility locates and ensures compliance with dig-safe procedures.
- Operates heavy and light equipment such as backhoes, dump trucks, air compressors, and hand tools.
- Inspects and controls infiltration problems related to the sewer system.
- Maintains tools, vehicles, and equipment in safe and proper working condition.
- Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner; resolves complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
- Set up and maintain safe work zones using cones, signage, and flagging as needed.
- Maintains accurate records of work performed, materials used, and equipment maintenance.
- Assists other Public Works divisions as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience: High school diploma or equivalent. Prior experience in water/wastewater system maintenance, construction, or related field preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Water distribution and sewer collection system operations, maintenance, and repair.
- Occupational hazards, safety practices, and traffic control procedures.
- Ability to operate a variety of power tools and equipment related to utility construction and repair.
- Ability to read maps, construction drawings, and utility system diagrams.
- Strong communication skills.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to work in adverse weather conditions, confined spaces, perform heavy manual labor, and respond to emergencies after hours.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Basic principles of recordkeeping and reporting.
- Ability to work on-call.
Licenses & Certifications:
- Valid state CDL Class B driver's license preferred or must be able to obtain within first year of employment.
- Possession of or ability to obtain a Class I (or higher) Wastewater Collections certification within a specified timeframe.
- Water Systems Operation Class D within a specified timeframe.
- Flagger or Work Zone Safety Certification (preferred or required after hire).
Working Conditions:
Work is performed outdoors in various weather conditions and may involve exposure to raw sewage, hazardous materials, and traffic hazards. Requires physical strength and endurance, including lifting up to 75 pounds, walking, bending, standing for long periods, and operating vibrating equipment. Full-time, Monday through Friday, with overtime, weekends, and holiday work during emergencies. On-call duty as required.
