Overview Genetic Counselor – Stony Brook University Hospital, Children’s Hospital Genetic Counseling team. The counselor participates in all aspects of counseling, including pediatric, prenatal and collaborative support for the Stony Brook Cancer Center, as part of the clinical and medical genetics team. The role supports multidisciplinary teams focused on patient diagnosis, care coordination, and patient-centered communication.

Responsibilities

Provide all aspects of prenatal genetic counseling, including arranging testing and communicating with care providers.

Assess personal and family histories related to hereditary cancer syndromes and arrange for testing.

Document clinic sessions with timely notes; order genetic laboratory tests, liaise with labs and patients, and obtain consents.

Collaborate with genetic counseling team members to provide cross-coverage for oncology, pediatric, and prenatal services as needed.

Discuss benefits and limitations of genetic testing options.

Assist families in understanding genetic disorders, including probable course, management options, and recurrence risks.

Develop and present education and related information with the team as appropriate.

Participate in research protocols and collaborative patient care initiatives as directed.

Perform administrative tasks related to counseling services and participate in committees or special projects.

Provide teaching and supervision to students or other health care professionals as appropriate.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling.

Board eligible or certified by the American Board of Medical Genetics/American Board of Genetic Counseling. If board eligible, certification must be achieved within 1 year of employment.

Excellent communication skills, compassion for patients, and collaborative work ethic.

Preferred Qualifications

Fluent in English and Spanish.

Experience counseling in Pediatrics, Prenatal, and/or Oncology.

Ability to work effectively in both team-based and autonomous environments.

Anticipated Pay Range: The salary range is $78,030 - $91,555 Base. The specific offer will be based on validated years of experience.

Some positions offer location pay for UUP full-time positions ($4,000). Total compensation includes benefits such as leave, health plans, and pension.
