Electronic Merchant Systems
Kurv is transforming the payment processing experience for merchants, partners, and ISOs by building modern, scalable platforms that unify onboarding, transaction management, and merchant tools. As we grow, our data infrastructure and reliability are critical to delivering secure, seamless experiences for our customers.
We are seeking our first dedicated Database Administrator (DBA) to join our IT department in Cleveland. This is a foundational role that will establish best practices, modernize legacy systems, and ensure our databases support Kurvs future in cloud, AI, and payments.
Role Overview
The DBA will be responsible for managing, securing, and optimizing Kurvs database environments across SQL Server, AWS-hosted services, and future cloud-native data platforms. The ideal candidate has deep hands-on skills in performance tuning, query optimization, cloud migration, and data architecture and the ability to untangle legacy designs while building scalable, modern solutions. This role is both tactical (day-to-day database management) and strategic (guiding Kurvs Data Lake, Data Warehouse, and compliance readiness).
Key Responsibilities
Performance Tuning & Query Optimization: Analyze query execution plans, fix parameter sniffing issues, and design efficient indexing strategies.
Rewrite legacy T-SQL into modern, SARGable, efficient patterns.
Manage statistics and ensure consistent query performance.
Operational Management: Own backups, restores, and high availability/disaster recovery strategies (Always On).
Enforce database security: role-based access, permissions, auditing, and encryption.
Ensure compliance with PCI-DSS, SOC2, and data privacy regulations.
Legacy Modernization: Refactor decade-old stored procedures, functions, and schemas.
Redesign/normalize schemas for scalability and maintainability.
Partner with application teams to fix inefficient patterns (bad joins, string splitting).
Design schemas, partitioning strategies, and modern data models.
Build ETL/ELT pipelines to stage, cleanse, and migrate data to the cloud.
Establish data lifecycle management policies (archiving, tiered storage, retention, compliance).
S3 + Glue + Athena: build curated layers of a Data Lake for analytics.
DMS (Database Migration Service): CDC pipelines for minimal-downtime migrations.
Redshift: design and optimize analytical workloads in columnar storage.
Security: IAM, KMS, VPC, networking best practices for PCI/PII compliance.
Broader Capabilities: DevOps & Infra-as-Code with CloudFormation/Terraform to automate reproducible database environments.
Monitoring & Observability: establish baselines using CloudWatch, Performance Insights, and related tools.
Cross-Team Communication: translate technical risks and tradeoffs into plain language for leadership, while collaborating with developers on efficient database usage.
