Reports to Director, Patient Care Services. Through the direct supervision of the professional nursing staff, assists in the care of patients undergoing surgical intervention and assists in the care, preparation, and maintenance of sterile and unsterile supplies and equipment. These positions act as a primary scrub person who handles the instruments, supplies and equipment during the surgical procedure; anticipates the needs of the surgeon; maintains the sterile field; may act as an unsterile member of the surgical team, obtaining instruments, supplies and equipment while the procedure is in progress. Responsibilities Scrubs and assists surgeons or acts as a second circulator by applying aseptic principles, observing sterile technique, and correcting breaks in technique. Assist in emergency situations, using sound judgment to institute corrective procedures as directed by the surgeon, anesthesiologist, charge nurse, or circulating nurse; perform CPR when needed. Prepare for unusual cases by reviewing preparatory literature and consulting with experienced personnel; scrub in and set up instrumentation prior to patient entry; ensure items are in place on the sterile field as listed on the preference card. Maintain patient privacy, dignity, and comfort; assist in positioning and ensure a safe, efficient operative environment. Follow department policies, report incomplete assignments, and channel problems to appropriate resources for resolution. Initiate cleanup and turnover of the surgery room; anticipate needs of the surgical team for instrumentation and supplies during procedures.

Qualifications and Requirements

Successful completion of an accredited school of surgical technology, or equivalent training; maintain surgical certification/licensure as required; maintain current BLS certification. Current licensure or certification as applicable (state of Indiana); must maintain relevant licensure and certifications as required by position/department. Knowledge of fundamentals of anatomy and physiology; thorough knowledge of sterilization procedures and aseptic techniques; ability to prepare operating rooms and maintain aseptic conditions. Ability to scrub, drape patients, and handle specimens; strong interpersonal skills to collaborate with patients, co-workers, physicians, and staff.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

Work in a patient care/operating room environment with physical exertion, exposure to biohazards and anesthetic gases; may require standing for extended periods and lifting/pushing equipment as needed. On-call requirements: report within 30 minutes when called in.

Organizational Responsibilities

Participate in department meetings and complete mandatory education, annual competencies, and health requirements within established timeframes. Maintain licensure/certification in good standing; adhere to universal precautions, safety, and ergonomic practices; follow organizational policies. Ability to work overtime or additional shifts when required.

Education and Experience: The knowledge, skills, and abilities are typically obtained through completion of an accredited surgical technology program, armed forces training as a surgical technologist, or completion of an LPN nursing program.
