1 Year | Possibility of 90-Day Extension We are seeking a New Jersey-licensed physician (MD or DO) to serve as Medical Director for a local health department under a part-time, contract-based agreement. This role provides medical oversight for public health services in alignment with
N.J.A.C. 8:52-3.2
— the Ten Essential Public Health Services. The Medical Director operates under the administrative supervision of the local Health Officer and is responsible for developing, evaluating, and implementing medical policies and clinical guidance for public health initiatives, communicable disease management, screenings, vaccinations, and emergency preparedness. Responsibilities
Serve as medical consultant for communicable disease investigations, including outbreaks, reportable illnesses, and tuberculosis (TB). Provide standing medical orders for vaccines and treatments, including COVID-19. Authorize and oversee immunization programs, including Hepatitis A, MMR, and travel-related vaccines. Supervise TB control efforts, including chest X-ray reviews, Directly Observed Therapy (DOT), and QuantiFERON Gold testing. Establish protocols
Lead screening Urine pregnancy screening Biometric screenings (Glucose, Lipid, Hemoglobin A1C) Needle stick injury responses (including in medical needs shelters) Parentage swab collection Prenatal vitamin dispensing Liaise with public health nurses and external medical providers to ensure clinical coordination Ensure compliance with NJ Public Health Standards, particularly the Ten Essential Public Health Services Clinical Oversight Includes
Standing orders for: COVID-19 vaccinations and treatments MMR, Hepatitis A, and travel vaccines Immune Globulin Epinephrine and management of adverse reactions TB-related services: Chest X-ray for suspects/contacts QuantiFERON TB Gold Test Directly Observed Therapy (DOT) Health screenings: Lead exposure Urine pregnancy tests Biometric testing (A1C, glucose, lipids) Emergency preparedness: Needle stick protocols Oversight of medical needs shelter procedures Required
Medical Degree (MD or DO) Active medical license in the State of New Jersey Preferred
Experience in Public Health or working with government/public agencies Prior experience as a Medical Director or in a leadership/oversight role within a clinical or public health setting Skills & Competencies
Proven ability to issue standing medical orders Understanding of communicable disease management Familiarity with public health protocols and NJ administrative codes (N.J.A.C. 8:52) Strong communication skills to coordinate across multidisciplinary teams
