Overview
Medical Director, Bureau of Communicable Diseases (BCD) at the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYC Health Department). The NYC Health Department is the oldest and largest city health department in the United States, dedicated to protecting and improving the health of all New Yorkers and advancing equity in public health. The Bureau of Communicable Diseases oversees surveillance, prevention, and control of more than 70 infectious diseases, including foodborne, enteric, waterborne, respiratory (including COVID-19), zoonotic and vectorborne diseases. Duties and Responsibilities
Take a leadership role in advising on all aspects of operational infectious disease work, particularly in antibiotic stewardship, infection control capacity building, and surveillance and investigations of drug-resistant pathogens. Oversee the Antibiotic Resistance Prevention Unit, working with providers on antibiotic stewardship, infection control capacity building, and surveillance and investigations of drug-resistant pathogens. Oversee the testing and vaccination team established during the COVID-19 pandemic. Oversee coordination of provider engagement activities across BCD and coordination of community engagement activities across BCD. Participate in senior-level meetings and policy discussions. Contribute to special projects and analyses; review abstracts and manuscripts. Serve as Physician on Call for acute communicable disease issues. Assist with grant report writing and renewal applications. Serve in a leadership role in the Agency's Incident Command System for public health emergencies. Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York; and either:
Valid Board Certification issued by the appropriate American Specialty Board in a required specialty area; or Current approved application on file for admission to the certifying examination given by the appropriate American Specialty Board in a required specialty area.
Assignment Levels
Assignment Level II: In addition to Level I qualifications, one year of satisfactory experience practicing in the specialty area. Assignment Level III: A valid license to practice medicine in New York; Master’s degree in Public Health (or equivalent) including or supplemented by graduate credits in epidemiology and biostatistics; completion of the Epidemic Intelligence Service program may substitute for the Master’s degree; and at least two years of satisfactory epidemiology experience after the Master’s degree (board certification or eligibility may substitute for one year). Assignment Level IV: A valid NY license; completion of an approved residency in internal medicine, family practice, pediatrics, or related specialty; board certification or board eligibility in Infectious Disease, Pulmonary Medicine, or related subspecialty; completion of an approved fellowship with two years’ experience in infectious diseases, pulmonary medicine, or related subspecialty. Preferred Skills
Expertise in infectious diseases and public health surveillance; strong communication skills. Local or state public health agency experience, especially in communicable disease surveillance and outbreak response. Grant writing and administration experience preferred but not required. Strong supervisory and team-building skills; effective leadership; excellent written and oral communication; ability to manage multiple assignments in a fast-paced environment. Residency
