Licensure or Certification: Not required, but strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. Specific certifications may be required for higher or supervisory roles. May qualify through the Grandfathering Provision if applicable. Grade Determinations for GS-10 - Medical Instrument Technician (Echocardiography):
In addition to core competencies at GS-9, positions may be supervisory or non-supervisory with specialized knowledge. Experience: At least 1 year of relevant experience at the next lower grade, demonstrating the following KSAs: Advanced knowledge of complex and non-standard procedures. Ability to plan and establish integrated treatment programs. Ability to evaluate new products and equipment. Ability to manage fiscal matters, including budgets and resource planning. Knowledge of supervisory duties including work assignment, performance evaluation, staff selection, and disciplinary actions. Certifications:
Registration by CCI as a Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) or by ARDMS as a RDCS is highly desirable. BCLS and ACLS certifications are also desirable. Assignments:

Identify and record anomalies from ultrasound imaging, including Doppler recordings. Operate complex diagnostic equipment in the Cardiology Section. Perform advanced procedures such as real-time 3D cardiac ultrasounds. Communicate findings related to cardiovascular diseases. Perform specific ultrasonic examinations and adapt techniques to individual patients. Follow radiation safety guidelines and utilize protective equipment. Capture workload data, interpret preliminary readings, and document physician interpretations with correct CPT codes. Explain procedures to patients and prepare them accordingly. Serve as a subject matter expert for Transesophageal Echocardiography probes. Determine and recommend appropriate contrast agents. Collaborate on staff development and training in Echocardiography.
