Nursing Manager (Nights) - CVICU

At Houston Methodist, the Manager Nursing position is responsible for 24-hour comprehensive operational responsibility for the delivery and quality of patient care in the designated areas of responsibility. This registered nurse position fosters interdepartmental/interprofessional collaboration. The Manager, Nursing participates in committees, representing unit and Nursing, and contributes to developing and implementing performance initiatives to ensure optimal patient safety, outcomes and customer satisfaction. This position demonstrates leadership qualities and critical thinking through self-direction, initiative, effective interpersonal skills and oral/written communication. The manager position responsibilities include managing the daily work activities of the department staff to ensure quality, productivity, functional excellence and efficiency while assisting management in accomplishing strategic and operational objectives. It also provides guidance to staff and is responsible for staffing, budget compliance, contributing to staffing decisions such as hiring and terminating employment, coaching and counseling; staff development, and assisting in the development and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure a safe and effective work environment. This position also implements training, monitoring and operations initiatives that secure compliance with ethical and legal business practices and accreditation/regulatory/government regulations. Responsibilities Manages the daily work activities of the department staff to ensure quality, productivity, functional excellence and efficiency; assists management in accomplishing strategic and operational objectives; provides guidance to staff; staffing and budget compliance; participates in staffing decisions (e.g., hiring and terminating employment); coaching and counseling; assists in policy and procedure development to ensure a safe and effective work environment; implements training, monitoring and operations initiatives that secure compliance with ethical and legal business practices and accreditation/regulatory/government regulations. Provides fair and consistent leadership and communication to maintain a competent and engaged employee group; conducts regular department meetings to review policies and procedures, rounds on all employees, completes performance appraisals, conducts new-hire feedback sessions, coaching/corrective counseling, and provides recognition to achieve desired outcomes. Facilitates and promotes effective team dynamics and teambuilding; participates in and/or leads department process improvements as needed. Meets or exceeds thresholds for department and/or system metrics on employee engagement indicators such as action readiness score and tier level. Establishes effective two-way communication with staff; demonstrates active listening; solicits and acknowledges feedback; makes equitable decisions; supports organizational goals; coaches staff to communicate with patients and families as part of the plan of care; assists staff with stress management practices.
Service Essential Functions
Plans and organizes day-to-day department operations, schedule and activities; sets priorities and functional standards; directs staff to ensure high-quality service and patient satisfaction. Drives department service standards and activities to impact patient/customer-based satisfaction; participates on entity committees as a voice for the department. Serves as a role model to staff; reinforces service orientation and focuses on improving patient care; resolves concerns, complaints or conflicts with patients, families, physicians and other interprofessional health care team members, taking appropriate action and channeling concerns according to procedures. Maintains ongoing interactions with patients, families, physicians, and staff to improve patient care and service.
Quality/Safety Essential Functions
Ensures a safe and effective working environment; monitors and updates the department safety plan and relevant accreditation/regulatory safety guidelines; ensures staff maintain required credentials that demonstrate competency per accrediting agency or department guidelines as applicable. Uses and optimizes information systems to enhance operations; supports performance improvement and data management/analysis functions. Employs a proactive approach to optimizing safe outcomes by monitoring and improving department workflow; promotes peer-to-peer accountability; reports near misses and/or adverse events; identifies solutions via collaboration; adopts lean principles; models situational awareness and uses teachable moments to improve safety. Monitors self and employee compliance with policies, procedures, and System HR Standards of Practice; addresses non-compliance (e.g., focal reviews, disaster plan, in-services, influenza immunization, wage and hour, timecard submission, timely termination submission, etc.). Prepares measurable goals and objectives aligned with Houston Methodist priorities and develops action plans for achieving them in collaboration with others.
Finance Essential Functions
Assists in the development of the department budget; ensures cost-effective operation; manages/audits department expenses within approved budget parameters; meets budgeted/flex revenue and/or expense targets; develops staffing plans that reflect cost-effectiveness. Implements department strategies to achieve financial targets and staffing needs by optimizing productivity, supply/resource efficiency, minimizing overtime, and other department-specific factors. Plans coverage of unit to maximize presence of management and staff; develops staffing plans and schedules to meet department/patient care needs while controlling costs.
Growth/Innovation Essential Functions
Identifies and implements innovative solutions for practice or workflow changes to improve department operations or other department/system directed shared governance activities; supports change initiatives and maintains effectiveness during major changes in work responsibilities or environment; adapts to new work structures, processes, requirements or cultures. Proactively evaluates processes; recommends and implements action plans for change; follows through to ensure effective, sustainable change; participates in developing and implementing new procedures and revisions of existing procedures. Identifies opportunities to build strategic relationships between one's area and other areas, teams, departments, and units to achieve business goals. Seeks opportunities to identify developmental needs of self and staff; ensures ongoing career discussions; updates the IDP; conducts conversations with staff about their development.

Work Experience
Three years experience in nursing, one year in a progressive leadership role in healthcare; for HM internal, two years' experience in nursing which includes HM performance that demonstrates leadership abilities, i.e. charge nurse responsibilities.

RN - Registered Nurse - Texas State Licensure -- Compact Licensure - Must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days (if establishing Texas residency) AND BLS - Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) AND Magnet - ANCC Recognized Certification (ANCC)
Licenses And Certifications - Preferred
ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA) -- As required by department OR NVCRISIS - Nonviolent Crisis Intervention or Instructor (CPI) -- As required by department OR NIHSTROKE - National Institute of Health Stroke Scale Certification (AHA) -- As required by department
