Overview

The Associate Warden works as a senior staff member of the correctional leadership team. The Associate Warden assists the Warden in all aspects of operating the prison including both administrative functions and daily operations. In addition to day-to-day oversight responsibility for operations, the Associate Warden supervises the majors assigned to all functional areas of the institution. The AW position is on call 24/7 and demonstrates the highest level of professionalism in the industry. This position works to improve operations and resolve conflict within the staff as well as within the offender population; and conducts on-going assessments of operations to ensure that sound correctional practices are in place. Responsibilities Serve as a senior member of the correctional leadership team and assist the Warden in all aspects of operating the prison. Provide day-to-day oversight for operations and supervise the majors assigned to all functional areas of the institution. Be on call 24/7 and maintain the highest level of professionalism; work to improve operations and resolve conflicts within staff and offenders. Conduct ongoing assessments of operations to ensure sound correctional practices are in place.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have

at least 7 years of work experience in a correctional work setting with demonstrated progression into supervisory roles within that timeframe.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The position requires a comprehensive knowledge of state government and departmental operations including budget development, staff recruitment, policy development, employee accountability and performance appraisal, effective methods for maintaining prison security, staff scheduling and training, effective inmate rehabilitative and health care services, buildings and grounds maintenance, and a wide variety of programs and activities for staff and inmates. Fundamental knowledge of institutional operations and accrediting standards of performance. This position will teach correctional educational coursework as well as demonstrate proficiency in prison operations. This position requires the skills to manage a Level V (highest security level) prison providing a safe and secure correctional environment for adult male inmates. This position requires the ability to lead and motivate subordinate staff; to speak in public and provide guidance and training to staff and inmates; to perform a wide variety of administrative functions; and to develop a network of contacts and working arrangements with individuals and agencies outside of the prison.
