Position Overview Under the direction of the Transportation Management Team, the School Bus Driver is responsible for safely operating the school bus according to a set daily schedule. The Driver must ensure that the school bus is in good operating condition at all times, pick up and drop off students as per the schedule, maintain order and security on the bus and adhere to all laws, regulations, and rules of conduct. The Driver must also interact with BGCGSD members, parents, staff, and members of the public in a courteous and respectful manner. This includes receiving complaints about schedules and levels and quality of service. The Driver must make note of and report any such complaints and respond in a courteous and respectful manner. Essential Duties And Responsibilities Function Name/Tasks SCHOOL BUS OPERATION Transport children, parents, and staff by driving a school bus or passenger van to and from school, and to and from special outings or field trips while adhering to driving rules and regulations for providing a safe vehicle in the State of California. Maintain safety of BGCGSD fleet of vehicles by observing visual defects and checking operations systems routinely. Maintain good communications with the Clubs administration; checking in with the transportation Coordinator daily. Serve as a positive role model and example for BGCGSD members through appropriate dress, speech, attitude, and courtesies. Maintain consistent, punctual, and regular attendance. Transport Clubs members by picking them up at assigned stops; instructing when it is safe to board the vehicle; take attendance; establish loading and unloading procedures, and the importance of adhering to all safety rules. Interact with BGCGSD members, parents, staff, and members of the public in a professional manner; receive and respond to complaints about schedules and quality of service. Be aware of current safety protocols and enforce transportation seating guidelines as required by BGCGSD and the State of California. Conduct daily health, wellness checks & temperature screenings on all members as outlined in current guidelines. Enforce safety and discipline rules, follow all vehicle and driving laws, and implement emergency plans in the event of an accident. Complete annual classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction to meet all California state licensing requirements for CA School Bus Driver Certificates. Maintenance: perform daily pre- and post-inspections, document in vehicle logs, assist with routine maintenance, clean vehicles, monitor fluid levels, tire pressure, and report needs to Transportation Coordinator. Qualifications Must be 18 years of age with a High School diploma or GED (Required) Must have three (3) years of relevant driving experience (Required) Possession of a valid California Commercial Drivers License (CDL) or CDL (Class B) with Passenger and School Bus Endorsements, and Air Brake Endorsement (Required) First Aid and CPR Certification, or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire (Required) Verification of safe driving record via DMV H6 printout (Required) Ability to operate school bus safely, read route sheets, and adhere to guidelines (Required) Strong analytical and problem-solving skills (Required) Ability to maintain discipline and safe transportation of passengers (Required) Excellent English communication and basic math/writing skills for maintenance reports (Required) Interpersonal skills to work with a diverse population (Required) Knowledge of traffic rules, safety practices, and procedures (Required) Experience as a school bus or heavy-duty vehicle driver (Preferred) Special Conditions Of Employment Pre-employment background check Compliance with organizations drug-free workplace policy Child Development drivers must provide verification of influenza, pertussis, and measles immunizations Valid California CDL or CDL (Class B) Passenger, School Bus and Air Brake Endorsements; Special School Bus Certificate DOT Medical Examiners Certificate and First Aid Certificate Safety & Wellness Ensure a safe, clean, and welcoming environment by enforcing safety protocols and policies. Identify and report safety concerns or maintenance needs. Participate in safety drills and risk assessment. Contribute to safety and wellness policy improvements across the Club.
