The Cardiac Cath Lab Technologist is responsible for assisting physicians during diagnostic and interventional cardiovascular procedures such as cardiac catheterizations, angioplasties, and pacemaker implantations. This role involves operating imaging equipment, monitoring patients vital signs, maintaining a sterile environment, and ensuring patient safety throughout the procedures. Key Responsibilities Prepare the cardiac catheterization lab for procedures, including setting up sterile fields and ensuring all necessary equipment and supplies are available and functional. Assist cardiologists during invasive procedures by handling and operating specialized imaging equipment (e.g., fluoroscopy, X-ray, intravascular ultrasound). Monitor and record patient vital signs and hemodynamic data during procedures. Administer contrast media under physician supervision and observe patient reactions. Ensure proper radiation safety protocols for patients and staff. Maintain accurate records of procedures and patient data in accordance with hospital and regulatory requirements. Perform post-procedure patient care, including monitoring recovery and assisting with transport. Sterilize and maintain cath lab equipment and troubleshoot technical issues. Respond quickly to medical emergencies and operate under sterile and high-pressure conditions. Participate in on-call rotation and be available for emergency procedures outside normal working hours.
Qualifications
Education: Associate's degree or completion of an accredited Cardiovascular Technology program or Radiologic Technology program.
Licensure/Certification: ARRT or RCIS certification preferred or required depending on state/hospital. BLS and ACLS certification required.
Experience: Minimum 12 years of experience in a cath lab, interventional radiology, or similar clinical setting preferred. New graduates may be considered with proper clinical training.
Skills & Competencies: Strong understanding of cardiac anatomy, electrophysiology, and hemodynamics. Proficiency in operating cath lab equipment and radiation safety practices. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to remain calm in high-stress environments. Attention to detail and strong organizational skills. Physical stamina for long procedures and the ability to lift/move patients and equipment.
Working Conditions
Work performed in a high-tech, sterile medical environment with exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and radiation. Must be able to stand for long periods and wear lead aprons during procedures. Rotating shifts, including on-call nights, weekends, and holidays may be required.
