Description:Job Title: Security Guard
Reports To: Shelter Coordinator
Status: Full-time / Part-time | Non-Exempt
Location: Billings, MT
Montana Rescue Mission is seeking a dedicated Security Guard to help maintain a safe, orderly, and welcoming environment for our guests, staff, and visitors. This role plays a vital part in crisis response, guest supervision, property protection, and supporting the overall operations of our ministry-based shelter.
- Maintain a safe, positive, and supportive environment for all shelter guests
- Respond to guest crises, medical emergencies, and behavioral incidents
- Monitor guest compliance with house rules, including substance screenings
- De-escalate conflicts and diffuse potentially volatile situations
- Perform regular perimeter and facility checks to ensure security
- Operate security systems (alarms, fire panels, smoke detectors)
- Log and report daily statistics, unusual activity, and safety concerns
- Greet visitors, answer phones, accept and document donations
- Provide prayer and spiritual support when requested
- Assist with shelter intakes, sleeping assignments, and guest monitoring
- Contact and coordinate with emergency services as necessary
- Attend and contribute to team meetings
- Maintain cleanliness and order in common areas and offices
- Other duties as assigned
- A mature Christian committed to the mission of serving the poor, addicted, and mentally ill from a Christ-centered perspective
- Calm and clear-headed in high-pressure or emergencies
- Strong understanding of security protocols and situational awareness
- Highly organized and detail-oriented
- Proficient with Microsoft Office and comfortable with data entry
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
- Experience working with individuals facing homelessness, addiction, or mental illness
- CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to obtain within 60 days)
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record (required)
- Previous experience in human services or security is preferred
- Familiarity with addiction recovery and mental health issues is a plus
- Must be able to climb stairs frequently during shifts
- Able to stand, walk, lift (up to 50 lbs), and perform physical duties for extended periods
- Comfortable working in odorous or emotionally challenging environments
- Ability to work in extreme temperatures and conditions, including noise, hazards, and potential exposure to violence
- Must be alert and responsive to alarms, disturbances, and safety threats
- High school diploma or GED required
- 1–2 years of experience in security, ministry, or human services preferred
- Strong decision-making skills and the ability to work independently or with a team
- Must pass a background check and drug screening
