Job Title: Security Guard

Reports To: Shelter Coordinator
Status: Full-time / Part-time | Non-Exempt
Location: Billings, MT


Job Summary:

Montana Rescue Mission is seeking a dedicated Security Guard to help maintain a safe, orderly, and welcoming environment for our guests, staff, and visitors. This role plays a vital part in crisis response, guest supervision, property protection, and supporting the overall operations of our ministry-based shelter.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Maintain a safe, positive, and supportive environment for all shelter guests
  • Respond to guest crises, medical emergencies, and behavioral incidents
  • Monitor guest compliance with house rules, including substance screenings
  • De-escalate conflicts and diffuse potentially volatile situations
  • Perform regular perimeter and facility checks to ensure security
  • Operate security systems (alarms, fire panels, smoke detectors)
  • Log and report daily statistics, unusual activity, and safety concerns
  • Greet visitors, answer phones, accept and document donations
  • Provide prayer and spiritual support when requested
  • Assist with shelter intakes, sleeping assignments, and guest monitoring
  • Contact and coordinate with emergency services as necessary
  • Attend and contribute to team meetings
  • Maintain cleanliness and order in common areas and offices
  • Other duties as assigned
Requirements:

Skills & Qualifications:
  • A mature Christian committed to the mission of serving the poor, addicted, and mentally ill from a Christ-centered perspective
  • Calm and clear-headed in high-pressure or emergencies
  • Strong understanding of security protocols and situational awareness
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and comfortable with data entry
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Experience working with individuals facing homelessness, addiction, or mental illness
  • CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to obtain within 60 days)
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record (required)
  • Previous experience in human services or security is preferred
  • Familiarity with addiction recovery and mental health issues is a plus
Physical & Work Environment Requirements:
  • Must be able to climb stairs frequently during shifts
  • Able to stand, walk, lift (up to 50 lbs), and perform physical duties for extended periods
  • Comfortable working in odorous or emotionally challenging environments
  • Ability to work in extreme temperatures and conditions, including noise, hazards, and potential exposure to violence
  • Must be alert and responsive to alarms, disturbances, and safety threats
Education & Experience:
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • 1–2 years of experience in security, ministry, or human services preferred
  • Strong decision-making skills and the ability to work independently or with a team
  • Must pass a background check and drug screening
