A Virginia hospital is seeking a board-certified Cardiothoracic Surgeon to provide 24-hour call coverage during the holiday period. This assignment includes structured rounding times, clinic responsibilities, and urgent callback coverage in collaboration with advanced practice providers (APPs). The ideal candidate will have broad cardiothoracic surgical expertise and experience managing high-acuity patients.

Assignment Highlights
  • Premium Holiday Coverage: Holiday call pays $6,000/day - among the top 10% nationally for cardiothoracic locums

  • Competitive Base Pay: Regular call pays $3,500/day , ranking in the top 12-15% nationally

  • Coverage Dates: 12/19/2025 - 12/29/2025 (10 days including premium holiday shifts)

  • Schedule:

  • 24-hour call coverage (7:00 AM - 7:00 AM)

  • Morning rounding: 7:00-8:00 AM (with APP support)

  • Afternoon rounding as needed

  • Clinic 2-3 afternoons per week (primarily post-op visits; APP does initial workup, physician confirms plan)

  • Callback: Any consults or inpatient needs outside of scheduled rounding and clinic

  • Support Staff: Multiple APPs provide clinic, inpatient, and overnight/weekend coverage

  • EMR: Epic

  • Agency Note: HPA Healthcare is Joint Commission-certified. Travel and lodging prepaid; malpractice fully covered.

    Responsibilities
    • Provide 24-hour cardiothoracic call coverage including consults, admissions, and emergent procedures.

    • Perform full range of adult cardiothoracic surgery, including CABG, valve repair/replacement, aortic surgery, atrial fibrillation/LAA management, EVAR, and minimally invasive approaches.

    • Conduct structured daily rounding :

    • Morning: 7:00-8:00 AM

    • Afternoon: as scheduled with APPs

  • Staff clinic 2-3 afternoons/week (post-op visits, continuity of care).

  • Collaborate with APPs and multidisciplinary care teams.

  • Document all encounters in Epic EMR .

    Skills & Experience
    • MD/DO; completed Cardiothoracic Surgery residency/fellowship

    • Board-certified or board-eligible (ABTS)

    • Active Virginia license (required at submission)

    • Current DEA & AHA certifications (ACLS/BLS)

    • Strong procedural competency and teamwork orientation
