Position Overview

A coastal hospital in Nags Head, NC, is seeking a Board Eligible or Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physician to provide evening and overnight locum coverage . This role includes high-acuity emergency care, standard ED procedures, responding to codes, and managing ICU/critical care patients in collaboration with hospitalists. Physicians must be comfortable with a busy ED environment (average 100 patients/day) and critical care responsibilities.

Assignment Highlights
  • Holiday Premium: Christmas Day shifts (Dec 25) pay $5,000/day - premium holiday coverage well above market norms

  • Schedule: 10-hour shifts (evening/overnight focus)

  • Workload: Avg 1.8 patients per hour ( 100/day ED volume) Inpatient census 20

  • Clinical Duties:

    • Standard ED procedures

    • Respond to codes

    • Manage ICU/critical care cases

    • Collaborate with in-house Hospitalists for admissions

  • Orientation: Required the day before first scheduled shift

  • Agency Note: HPA Healthcare is Joint Commission-certified. Travel, lodging, and malpractice are fully covered.

Responsibilities
  • Provide direct care for ED patients across evening and overnight shifts.

  • Perform full scope of Emergency Medicine procedures, including airway management, central/arterial lines, chest tubes, wound care, and critical care stabilization.

  • Respond to all hospital codes, including cardiac arrest, rapid response, and trauma.

  • Manage ICU/critical care patients when indicated.

  • Coordinate admissions with Hospitalists.

  • Complete timely documentation in EMR.

  • Deliver high-quality, patient-centered care in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.

Skills & Experience
  • MD/DO; Board Certified or Eligible in EM (ABEM, ABPS, ABFM, ABIM considered)

  • Active North Carolina license required

  • Active DEA license

  • ACLS, ATLS, and PALS certifications required

  • Must be comfortable in a high-volume, high-acuity emergency setting
