Under general supervision performs a variety of duties to encompass but not limited to the care and management of patients in accordance with the Brown University Healths mission vision values with consideration of the life span including all developmental stages as well as cultural patterns. All essential functions performed in this position reflect the age specific needs of the patients. Responsibilities
Obtain and record detailed medical histories; perform and record complete and detailed physical examinations; record pertinent progress notes in the medical records; prepare discharge summaries for the attending physicians signatures. Draw blood for laboratory tests; administer fluids, blood products, and medications via venipuncture or venous access; initiate life-saving measures in emergency situations until aid arrives. Perform comprehensive and problem-focused histories and physical exams; interpret and correlate laboratory and diagnostic procedures; formulate differential diagnoses and working diagnoses; develop treatment plans for orthopedic problems within scope of practice. Implement therapeutic interventions for specific conditions when appropriate; exercise judgment on problems requiring consultation, referral, or evaluation by the supervising orthopedic surgeon or other health care professionals. Initiate patient orders for admission as directed by the physician and in accordance with hospital procedure. Assess patient status; participate in the development of a patient care management plan with the registered nurse and attending physicians. Maintain established hospital/department policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control standards. Order, collect and perform appropriate laboratory or diagnostic procedures and studies including but not limited to blood and tissue specimens; order or perform diagnostic studies such as EMG, ECG, compartment pressure measurements, X-ray examinations including CT, MRI, and bone scans. Assist in surgery as a first assist and in other surgical duties delegated by the surgeon; conduct hospital rounds, write orders, and take call for the orthopedic surgeon; evaluate and clarify clinical conditions and implement treatment plans for hospitalized patients; dictate discharge summaries, histories and physicals. Evaluate, screen and counsel patients on health maintenance and promote utilization of community resources; design, conduct, and/or participate in research studies; manage databases and perform quality assurance. Qualifications
BASIC KNOWLEDGE:
Graduate of a Physician Assistant Program with a B.S. Degree or its equivalent; certified or certification eligible by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants; certified in American Heart Association Basic Life Support/Advanced Cardiac Life Support. Experience:
One to two years of experience in a clinical orthopedic practice with experience in orthopedic surgical procedures. Work Environment and Physical Requirements
Healthcare environment such as acute care hospitals, physicians offices and ancillary healthcare enterprises. Works with medical equipment and has direct patient contact. Hazards are minimized by adherence to established safety procedures and precautions including use of safety equipment and protective clothing. Independent Action
