Job Summary: We are seeking an experienced and driven EHS Manager with deep expertise in hydrogen systems and transportation safety to support our Service & Operations team. This role focuses on field safety inspections, hydrogen-specific hazard controls, and transport compliance for hydrogen delivery trucks, trailers, mobile fuelers, and on-site refueling equipment. This position is highly field-oriented and involves regular travel to customer sites, production plants, refueling stations, and mobile hydrogen deployments across the U.S. The EHS Manager will also utilize remote monitoring tools and networked safety systems to oversee equipment status, pressure controls, interlocks, and hydrogen-specific alarms across the fleet.
Responsibilities: Hydrogen Systems Safety Oversight Conduct in-depth safety audits and inspections on hydrogen trailers, mobile fueling equipment, dispensers, and stationary storage at field sites. Validate proper functioning of all hydrogen-specific interlocks, leak detection systems, vent stacks, relief valves, and emergency shutoff systems. Monitor safety-critical systems via networked telemetry and IoT to ensure pressure, temperature, and alarm thresholds remain within safe operating limits. Oversee safe loading, unloading, and transfer procedures for compressed hydrogen at mobile and stationary sites. Logistics & DOT/Hazmat Compliance Ensure all hydrogen transport operations comply with DOT, HAZMAT, FMCSA, and PHMSA regulations. Inspect trailers, pressure vessels, HAZMAT placards, and vehicle safety systems prior to field deployment. Review and maintain documentation such as shipping papers, HAZMAT manifests, driver certifications, and pre/post-trip inspections. Training & Incident Response Develop and deliver field training programs for technicians and drivers on hydrogen safety, HAZMAT handling, defensive driving, fire risk, and emergency response. Lead incident investigations related to hydrogen leaks, transport violations, or on-site safety incidents. Conduct root cause analysis and corrective action planning. Regulatory Compliance & Documentation Maintain all compliance records for OSHA, EPA, DOT, and state-specific hydrogen safety standards. Support permitting and inspections related to hydrogen fueling infrastructure. Liaise with regulatory bodies and represent the company during audits and safety reviews. Continuous Improvement & Technology Identify and implement safety improvements across field equipment and transport operations. Collaborate with engineering and operations teams to review and approve new hydrogen systems and equipment for field use. Use networked diagnostics and real-time alerts to proactively identify safety issues before they escalate.
Skills and Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, Engineering, or related technical field. 2-5 years of experience in EHS roles, preferably in hydrogen, chemical, or fuel handling environments. Strong knowledge of hydrogen system safety (gaseous hydrogen, high-pressure containment, fueling interfaces, etc.). Deep understanding of DOT, HAZMAT, OSHA, EPA, and NFPA 2 (Hydrogen Technologies Code). Familiarity with remote monitoring tools, interlock systems, and digital safety diagnostics. Strong leadership, training, and communication skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and EHS documentation tools.
Preferred Qualifications: Certified Safety Professional (CSP), CHMM, or equivalent. HAZMAT certification for hydrogen or compressed gases. Prior experience with hydrogen fueling systems, transportation trailers, and mobile fuelers. Knowledge of ISO 14001/45001, emergency planning, and confined space safety. Experience supporting multi-state field operations with extensive travel.
