This role serves as a technical expert for product and process issues including those related to forging, heat treating, quality assurance, product development, and process improvement efforts. An individual in this role will be focused on Aluminum while serving as a back-up to the team.
Job Duties and Responsibilities Interpret industry and customer specifications and communicate requirements Collaborating with customer and sales team members on difficult technical jobs Develop, write, and ensure effective execution of manufacturing procedures including forging and heat treatment procedures. Teaching office and shop employees metallurgical concepts and practices Develop and maintain raw material specifications Troubleshooting and problem solving utilizing a scientific approach Disposition of material (NDE) and mechanical test failure rejections Research and development projects for process improvement and product development. Work closely with cross functional team (Sales, Forge, Heat Treat, Vendors, etc.) to develop new customers, product types and/or market segments Support raw material supplier development including auditing and quality issues Represent Scot Forge in industry organizations as requested (e.g., ASTM, AMS, AGMA, API, ABS, FIA) Qualifications: Education/Experience: Bachelor of Science Degree in Metallurgical Engineering or Material Science (emphasis on Metallurgy). Minimum 1-3 years’ experience as a Metallurgical Engineer with a focus in Aluminum for majority of experience or most recent role. Required Skills: Intermediate understanding of physical metallurgy principles as they relate to metal working and heat treatment applications. Experience with or willingness to learn SolidWorks and FORGE FEA software Demonstrated ability to quickly learn relevant metallurgy topics. Requirements: Position requires a mix of working in office and occasionally working in production areas while forklifts, overhead cranes and related equipment are in use. On occasion while performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to heat and cold weather conditions as well as wet and/or humid conditions. When in the area of production, appropriate PPE is mandatory. Safety hazards such as heights, uneven ground, confined space, noise, pressure vessels, high pressure hydraulics, suspended loads, heavy equipment, chemicals, cut hazards, asphyxiation, CO2, aldehydes, silica, aluminum oxides, electrical shock and burns from hot product, combustion and electrical hazards are possible exposures on the shop floor. Office – 40-50% Metallurgy Laboratory – 5-10% (running lab equipment) Manufacturing Shop Floor – 20-30% Lifting up to 65 lb. 5-10% overnight travel (Representing Scot Forge at Industry Organizations and Career Fairs)
