About Us Checkmate Design is a St. Louis-based architecture and design firm known for our commitment to excellence, creativity, and revitalizing historic spaces. We specialize in adaptive reuse, preservation, and transformative projects that shape the urban fabric while honoring the past.

As we grow, we’re seeking a Licensed Architect with a strong background in project management and historic tax credit (HTC) documentation to join our collaborative, energetic team.

Position Overview We’re looking for a detail-oriented and driven architect to lead projects from concept through completion—balancing creative design, technical proficiency, and rigorous documentation. The ideal candidate is passionate about preservation, adept at navigating HTC programs, and confident managing multi-phase design and construction processes.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the design and execution of architectural projects with an emphasis on historic preservation and adaptive reuse Coordinate and manage project timelines, consultants, and budgets across all phases Prepare and submit state and federal historic tax credit applications (Part 1, 2, and 3) Ensure compliance with Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation Conduct site assessments and historic research Collaborate closely with clients, stakeholders, and local/state agencies Mentor junior staff and contribute to a positive studio culture

Qualifications

Licensed Architect (NCARB certification a plus) 5+ years of professional experience in architecture, with at least 2 years focused on historic preservation or HTC-related projects Demonstrated project management experience from schematic design through construction administration Proficient in Revit, AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, and Microsoft Office Familiarity with Section 106, SHPO coordination, and NPS standards Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills Passion for revitalizing historic properties and community-oriented design
