Accountant
Our client, a leading non-profit, american international academy is seeking an Accountant to join their team in New York City.
$75,000 ‒ $80,000 Annually
Position Summary
The Accountant plays a key role in the financial operations of the New York office and supports a variety of accounting and administrative functions across both U.S. and international offices. This role ensures accurate financial reporting, supports compliance with nonprofit audit requirements, and contributes to the overall financial integrity of the organization.
Candidates should have strong nonprofit accounting experience, including familiarity with audits and donor-related financial tracking. Experience with accounting systems such as Sage Intacct or Blackbaud Financial Edge is strongly preferred.
Reports To:
Assistant Controller (New York)
With additional direction from the Director Finance and Chief Financial and Administrative Officer (CFAO)
Collaborates with Finance staff in Rome and Development staff in New York
Key Responsibilities:
Accounting & Financial Reporting
Prepare journal entries and monthly closing entries; upload Rome ledger for consolidated reporting
Perform account reconciliations (monthly and year-end), including balance sheet accounts
Assist with preparation for annual audit and 990 filings, including documentation and audit schedules
Maintain organized accounting records in accordance with retention policies
Accounts Payable & Receivable
Process vendor invoices, ACH/wire payments, and maintain vendor records (W-9s/W-8s)
Enter recurring payments (e.g., fellowships) and manage invoice coding accuracy
Monitor and reconcile accounts receivable and donor contributions in coordination with the Development Department
Reconcile general ledger with subledgers; handle credit card transactions and year-end 1099/1042 reporting
Cash Management & Banking
Manage daily cash position and check deposits
Reconcile and maintain investment account records
Administer corporate credit cards (issuance, reconciliations, and reporting)
Administrative Support
Assist with HR, payroll support, and occasional events
Respond to inquiries and provide administrative backup as needed
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
Minimum 3–5 years of relevant experience, preferably in a nonprofit setting
Solid understanding of nonprofit financial regulations and audit processes
Proficiency in accounting software such as Blackbaud Financial Edge, Raiser's Edge, or Sage Intacct (preferred)
Advanced Excel skills; proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
Exceptional attention to detail, organizational, and analytical skills
Ability to work independently and collaboratively across departments and international offices
Strong communication skills and discretion when handling confidential information
Experience working in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment
